Maybe there should be rules for flashmobs ...

I'm only halfway kidding. I can't help but wonder if Flashmobs have hit their lifespan and need to be done. I mean, everyone loved the Antwerp Sound of Music one (in fact, that's probably another robot test - if you don't like it; you're a robot). And of course, the Oprah/Black Eyed Peas one was fabulous ( Read more... )

I love flashmobs! Like everything else, it's a matter of quality - some are great and others, well, not so great. That Antwerp piece is among the better ones. Last time I was in Antwerp station was on a miserable, cold, wet day. That would have cheered me up enormously!

This is one of my favourites (at a station I've used countless times). An important factor is engaging bystanders in the fun.

Now THAT'S a flashmob! Thanks for the link - I hadn't seen that one.

And I'm with you -- seeing something like that would MAKE MY DAY!

Oh yeah, I've sung it in a ton of choirs and chorales and so on. I love it too :) But I don't think standing and singing *quite* has the same effect as movement. But I'm willing to be wrong :)

Flashmobs have become a dirty word in Philadelphia. There (well, "here", but I live an hour outside of it), flashmobs have come to mean gatherings of unruly teenagers who vandalize things and assault bystanders. In one, they roved through a Macy's, wrecking displays. In another, they gathered and went through a popular shopping street, breaking windows and hitting people. All organized by text and tweet. So now there's actually an anti-flash mob task force in the city. It's a shame.

I love your definition! And the funny thing is that that's the same flashmob Mike posted above! You bring up a good point -- I loved the *idea* of the flashmob, but not that it was trying to sell something.
