Va Tech Shooting

Okay, I let the dust settle on this one for a little bit before writing about it. Most of you know that I don't watch any sort of news shows because of how depressing they are (9/11 really turned me off to network TV). So, as a result, I always have a sort of delay between when things happen and when I find out about them. I found out about the ( Read more... )

I feel your pain on this, as we are in the same boat.
I was telling my friend about the ramifications this could have if it brought on the same mass hysteria that Columbine did.
I pray that we won't have to sacrifice our work because of this.

it's all a smokescreen. people don't want to wake the fuck up and put blame on who it really belongs to: Cho Seung-Hui. he shot himself, he's gone, there's no one to take the blame, to be "responsible" for the lives that were lost, so the media and everyone else has to point the finger somewhere else. it's bullshit. freedom of speech, anyone?

this world is fucked up and it has a lot of fucked up people in it and i absolutely agree with you said "If someone wants to kill 32 people, they're going to kill 32 people regardless of what you or I do." it's sad and disturbing, but it's very, very true.

the things you're saying are the things i was thinking when i read the plays online thinking that it would be some completely twisted and inhumane writing, like something that is completely disgusting and unacceptable. and when i read them and they sounded not so far removed from things i've read in workshop classes before, i worried.

if i were you, i wouldn't worry about it. first of all, your disposition seems to be completely different than what this guy's was. and secondly, when you're in grad school and you write 'unconventional' things, they most they can do to you is refer you to counseling. they can't send you to jail or prohibit you from writing.

plus, people (including profs) are going to go on summer vacation and at least forget a little bit about this...it'll die down.

what i'm trying to say is, DON'T COMPROMISE.

I agree with you.

I hate how everyone is asking what could've been done, because you know what? Nothing could have been done. He did have one english prof. who was concerned and mentioned it, but there was nothing they could do about it because really he didn't do anything wrong. He'd set fires before and was told to get counselling, but it doesn't help if the kid doesn't want it. I hate that everyone thinks that things could've been done. I really don't think they could. He was messed up and determined to create havoc and counselling or writing different types of works wasn't going to change that.

I feel bad that you and other writers feel you can't write things like you did anymore. :\

I agree.

What can I say? 2+2=5 is getting closer everyday.

The only reason we don't have an MFA in Creative Writing here at CMU is because the administration feels as though liberal arts aren't important enough to fund an MFA. So, our faculty is in a constant state of rebuilding since our faculty want to teach somewhere that has a good, reputable program with an MFA at least.

Our funding has already been cut in favor of hard sciences, and now this. Though, I'm sure you understand as an art student how us liberal art majors have always had the short straw.

Yeah, the MFA just recently got cut out altogether from the Art Progmram, in all concentration areas. COOL. In all fairness, I do think that BFAs need to have more space and some of the grad space would be ideal.

We need more fences on campus! How about...$200,000? Sick.
