Tournament of Lost Potential, Round 1: Supporting Cast

Jun 10, 2017 22:19

Welcome to the Tournament of lost potential! In which I´ll show you what characters had the most... well, POTENTIAL to become interesting or just develop, period. I´ll start with the supporting cast: Those characters who appear in few scenes/don´t contribute with Paolini´s idea of plot/Were a step above an extra. Let’s see which ones had the most ( Read more... )

Thanks for giving more details on the 'what if' development of Fadawar winning the Trial! I never went any further than "what if he actually won?" in the chapter sporkage, so your take was really interesting and could have really justified him and his tribe appearing in the story a lot more.

Liking your thoughts in this fun format a lot so far!

I feel honoured :)
One of the things that you´ll see me complaining several times is that Paolini butchers his characters roles (And sometimes personalities) due to the awful buildup management.
The absolute worst example is Arya since she is also one of the main characters. 85% of her character gets butchered due to the unfulfilled buildup. I´ll explain in detail in Round 3

How is this a tournament? More of a countdown. Unless...you're going to have an expansive description of these characters fighting it out. In which case my money's on Elva's Grandmother for secret bad ass.

Yeah, I think the Countdown of lost Potential is a more fitting name, since I didn´t even write it as they were competing with each other. Although I´m not sure if I should change it. If someone sees the last post I made, they are going to get confused. Unless I retconned the former post as well...

Elva´s Grandmother being a badass would have been a hilarious twist. (Insert new opening of Dragon Ball Super)

That was an awesome analysis! I like these kinds of "wasted potential" write-ups because it shows that you can find some gems even in bad literature. This is certainly more nuanced than a general "this is bad and you should feel bad!" approach.

It's not just that these new TOS make me very uncomfortable, but my browser has also been telling me since then that the script is broken/untrustworthy and it's not safe to log in. Yes, it could just be my browser being crazy, but I don't want to risk it.

A great analysis of the Lost Potential of the supporting cast.

I personally would have Morzan share spot No. 1 with Selena.
Paolini put so many contradictory things about him into the narrative that he would have been a really interesting
character and could have influenced the main cast even while being dead, if he had been properly developped.

Virodeil published a list of book quotes about Morzan, commenting on each one of them.

The list nicely shows the Lost Potential of this character.
