Battle walkthrough

Once more into the breach! This battle starts at a breach so I don't know what sort of planning went into it or how the assault was led, or even how the breach was made, but at least this city appears to have been taken by conventional (well, as  conventional as these battles get) means, not a surgical strike through all-too- ( Read more... )

Paolini probably watched 300 before writing the choreographed fight scenes. So imagine Eragon and Roran moving forward in slow motion and killing NPCs

For the most part, I agree. But when Eragon crashes into the door, knocking it off its hinges and sending it against the wall across the hall, punches the soldier who flies up and collides against the cieling, and ramming into the portcullis and leaving a dent in it, I'm picturing the French comic book character Asterix. Really!
I do enjoy picturing an Eragon-shaped hole in the door, the soldier's upper body stuck in the cieling with his legs dangling down, and an impression of Eragon's face and body in the iron grating of the portcullis.
Given the solidity of iron versus bone, running into iron portcullis hard enough to dent it would have crushed all his bones.

I wonder if the Varden or the Empire have sappers or explosives. I remember Orrin experimenting with something like gunpowder in Eldest, so did Paolini just forget that?

Paolini is basically saying Eragon has the strength of Superman. The vast majority of an impact force doesn't send the weight straight up, it goes into vibrations. I'd say from that, Eragon was at least 500x as strong as a man. Note how the man was smashed into the ceiling. He would have kept going much higher were the ceiling not there ( ... )

So if Roran ever fights Eragon, which one will Paolini give more superpowers?
