I hate the Saphira/Eragon Relationship

Oct 03, 2009 20:34

I apologize if I'm over-posting: I guess I'm just "getting stuff off my chest" so to speak. It's so nice to know there are like-minded people out there.

Saph and Era's relationship has bugged me from the very beginning. Well, both of the characters bugged me from the beginning, but we'll stick to the relationship for now.

1. Haha, I never actually realized that... it's like if your dog started calling you "my child". I think I'd be a little confused, slightly creeped out, and a tiny bit offended.

Whoa. Imagine how different those talking dog/cat kids' movies would be.

If "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" were like that, I might have actually seen it.

as far as i know my cats either call me 'maid' or 'slave' lol

cat 1 - 'maid~! oh maid! my pillow needs fluffing!'
cat 2 - 'hurry up slave! my tummy needs rubbing!'
cat 1 - *sigh* 'it is so hard to find good help these days.'

but yeah, i really don't like the saphira/eragon relationship either though i'll go as far as to say he's not the first one to make the mistake of having the animal sidekick exist solely to serve the mc's every whim.

saphira is a bodyguard, a blanket, a taxi cab, a drinking buddy, a jealous girlfriend, her entire universe just revolves around eragon. she would be much more realistic if she had goals of her own (like, for example, MATING) and deep down inside, longed to travel far and wide to see if any other dragons exist, instead of just taking people's word for it that there are only 4 left. if she helped eragon of her own free will as opposed to being obligated to do so just because paolini wrote it that way. if she and eragon were truly friends as opposed to having a *speshul* bond.

That makes me think of my rabbit...except he gets jealous when I lavish attention on anyone else.

Might just be me, but it seems like an almost romantic relationship. Eragon wears the pants, and Saphira is the adoring fangirl.

What Lenka said only more so. There really is a whole creepy-as-all-hell master/slave feel to the so-called bond between Rider and Dragon.

My cat would laugh himself sick at the relationship between those two. When I'm home, I am his slave. I feed him, I tickle him and cuddle him whenever he wants it, his meow is my command to the point that a single 4-am meow at my window can wake me from the deepest sleep and have me stumbling over to let him in.

We have a sign in our garden that sums it up: Dogs have masters, cats have staff. Replace dogs with dragons and you've got Eragon.

Well, most dogs have masters. I happen to serve a 150 lb lump that requires belly rubs every second of everyday.

In the books, I really don't remember and real bonding going on between them. There was some when Saphira was still a baby but once she got big she just became a giant mode of transportation for our favorite hero.

Ah, a fellow owner of a big-ass dog. My sister has a Smithfield/Border Collie cross, and he's been known to knock me over while saying hello. I'm not a big girl...

Yeah, I much preferred baby Saphira to adult Saphira. When she was a baby, she was sweet and cute and she didn't talk! >_<

What everyone said.

In my fantasy story, my MC 'bonds' with a tall sailing ship... and they keep yelling at each other (my MC yells at pretty much everyone, in fact) and neither is the other's slave or puppy or something. They're just friends (after a while into the story).

I only got started writing it, and I'm being quite slow, as I'm also looking for a job... but I wrote little pieces about my ships.
But it would typically be like
MC: Will you stop rocking ALL THE TIME? This is the THIRD time I fell down in less than FIVE MINUTES
Tall ship: May I remind you that I'm a TALL SHIP, we are on WATER and water is MOVING a LOT because we're in a fecking STORM???
MC: That's why you're telling me around, right? RIGHT?
Ship: This needed to be done, otherwise we would be DRIFTING and I would be LOSING PARTS LIKE NO TOMORROW
MC: It's about you ONCE AGAIN
Ship: It's about THE FUCKING FIVE OF US, DAMMIT. WHAT. THE. FUCK.
etc. (there are four humans on the ship)
