Road Trip, Day Seven
* * *
"So far, this road-trip sucks just a little, don't you think?" Mary scratched at her usually mussed hair with a bored gesture. She and Sue were at some food joint, getting them breakfast - as usual.
Sue shrugged. "Dunno. What were you expecting?"
"I don't know - more? Seeing some...nice sights?"
"You mean, other than Sam coming out of the shower every morning?"
Mary punched Sue on the shoulder in response. At the movement, Sue flinched, rubbing her arm. "Ouch, dammit."
Mary snorted. "Oh, c'mon - as if you're not use to it."
They stood in silence for a few more minutes. Suddenly there came a startled exclamation from directly behind Sue, causing her to jump a little.
"Oh my God - sweetheart - I hope you left the man who gave you those bruises." A middle aged black woman told Sue.
"I'm...sorry?"
"Just look at the state of you, you poor thing. Honestly, honey, he's no good if he treats you like that. It's a crime. You don't go back to him, now - you hear me?"
Almost everyone was staring by now. "I don't...think it's any of your business, really." Sue said, uncomfortably.
"Let's get out of here, huh?" Mary muttered at her side. Sue gladly obliged.
They were both little startled when they bumped into Dean right outside the door. There was a strange look on his face.
"Hey, uh...can we go...somewhere else? It's a little crowded in there." Mary told him.
He just nodded, turning towards the car.
*
Sam spent most of the morning in the car scanning a map. Mary had voiced her complaint about wanting to see some nice 'sights' to him and Dean, too. So Sam was trying to find just that.
The closest he came, by around lunch time, was a park overlooking a lake. He spread his arms as they got out of the car. "You approve?" he asked Mary.
She smiled at him, her heart squeezing painfully. It was such a Sam thing to do - a little gesture like this, that she knew came straight from the heart. "I love it." she told him honestly.
He nodded, satisfied and seemingly happy, too. Dean had walked off towards the water, hands in his pockets.
The girls laid out their food on a blanket under a tree. Mary caught Sue looking troubled. "What's up?" Sue nodded towards Dean.
"Oh, yeah - what is it with him, today? He's looking unusually...glum." Mary quirked an eyebrow. "Didn't you two...have fun, last night?"
"Oh no - we had fun, alright. About...three times."
Mary made a sour face. "Why, thank you for reminding me that I'm the only one who's still a virgin. I'll probably fuckin' die one, at this rate."
Sue gave her a sympathetic look. "Maybe we should...get you a cute guy, somewhere? See if we can't get Sammy jealous."
Mary let out a loud laugh. "Oh, please - you wanna know what that'll accomplish? Both Dean and Sam'll scare the poor guy off, and I'll STILL be right where I am, now."
Sue nodded. "Yeah, you're probably right." She glanced towards the boys, again. "They're SO freakin' infuriating sometimes, aren't they?"
"Oh, ALL the time."
Sue shook her head. She put her hands to her mouth. "Hey - food." she called to Dean and Sam.
As they joined the girls, Mary noted that for once, Dean didn't even really perk up at the presence of food.
*
They did a lot of driving, for the rest of the day. There was some classic Winchester bickering - Dean disagreeing with Sam over which routes to take. The girls sat in the back trying to suppress their sniggers.
By the time they found a motel that didn't look like a complete rat-infested dump, it was after eight at night, and Dean was in a foul mood.
"Ooh - gonna have your work cut out for you, tonight." Mary pointed out, glancing at Sue as they got their bags from the trunk.
Sue grinned, looking positively mischievous. "I'll put a smile on his face, soon enough. And, y'know...it's kinda good he's a little...wound up." Her grin broadened.
Mary cringed. "Thanks for the imagery."

When he shrugged off his jacket in their room, Sue noticed the tension in Dean's shoulders. She walked over to him, right at the same time he turned to face her. They just looked at each other for a few seconds.
Sue reached up for a kiss, but Dean backed away. He shook his head, not meeting her eyes. "Not...tonight."
All Sue's warning bells went off. "Come again?"
Dean moved even further away from her, heading towards the table by the window. He turned and leaned against it. "I...uh...I've been thinking."
"Oh, God - you sound like your brother. This can't be good." Sue muttered.
Dean took a breath. "Yeah, well - we...need to talk."
Sue groaned inwardly. This REALLY couldn't be good.
"I think...we should...take a break."
Sue frowned. "We're on a break."
Dean shook his head. "No, I mean...you and me - we should just...cool it, for a bit."
Sue's frown deepened. "So...what are you saying? We shouldn't be together...every night? Or...we should, like, take it easier when we are together? What?"
Dean seemed frustrated. "No, I...I mean we should...stop. Not...do it, anymore - period."
"For how long? A week? Two weeks?"
"Permanently!" Dean suddenly exclaimed, straightening up. "Just...I...I'm ending it, okay?"
Sue gaped at him. Then her face hardened. "You heard it - this morning - didn't you? What that stupid old bag said? Is THAT what this is about?"
Dean turned half away again, smiling wryly and shaking his head - a typical Dean avoidance mannerism, Sue noted with anger. "Well?" she prompted.
"Look, it doesn't matter. I've made up my mind. I'm not doing this anymore."
"And what about me? Don't I have a say?"
Dean looked her straight in the eyes. "No - you don't. You..." he paused, "I don't think you're thinking clearly - haven't been, since..."
"What's that suppose to mean?"
"You've got bad judgement, okay? So...I'm just doing the right thing, before this goes...any further."
Sue continued to stare at Dean in total stunned disbelief.
He picked up his jacket again. "I'm...gonna go sleep in the car." Without another word, he left the room.

Sam was instantly awoken by the late knock on their door. He was like that, sometimes. Residual habits left over from his upbringing, Mary always suspected.
He glanced over at Mary with a surprised look on his face when he went to open the door. Swinging it open wider, he allowed Sue to step inside.
Mary was immediately fully awake, too. "What's up?"
"Can we talk?" Sue said simply.
Sam looked awkward. He scratched the back of his neck. "I, uh - I'll just..."
"You don't need to go anywhere," Sue interrupted him, "we can go to me and...we can go to my room"
Mary got out of bed, pulling a pair of sweats over her pajama shorts, and taking a sweater from her bag. Finally she put her shoes on. "Don't worry if I don't come back." she said to Sam as they left. He nodded, concern on his face.
"Where's Dean?" was the first thing Mary asked as she and Sue entered the empty motel room.
"In the car. S'what he said, anyway." Sue said, her voice flat.
Mary sat down on the bed, and gave Sue a frank look. "Okay - spill."
"He ended it"
Mary gaped at Sue for several seconds, thinking she'd heard wrong. "What?"
"He just...ended it. Just like that. And...y'know Dean - didn't give me the benefit of ANY kind of explanation."
Mary still looked astonished. "I don't...you two had been so...happy. Everything was perfectly fine, wasn't it? Why..." Realization dawned in Mary's eyes. "Fuck - the diner this morning. He heard that, didn't he?" Sue just nodded.
"Crap!" Mary exclaimed passionately, "is THAT why he's doing this?"
"He wouldn't admit it, but of course that's why."
There was few moment's silence. Then Sue got up, and began pacing. She was finally beginning to look angry. Which was good. Mary much preferred angry Sue to numb Sue.
"Why can't people just...mind their own damn business? And WHERE does he get off saying I've got bad judgement?!"
Mary's eyes widened. "He said that?"
"Huh - yeah. Can you believe it? Like I'm some...post-trauma victim, who's self-destructive, and can't decide for myself what's best for me."
"Ah, I think self-destructive has always been more fitting to him, yeah?"
"Yes! Exactly. He shouldn't start...putting his damn issues on me!"
"So...what're you gonna do?" Mary asked.
Sue's face fell, and she sat down on the bed again. "Trying to get through to a Winchester, once his mind's set on something?" Sue said, doubtfully. Mary cringed.
Sue shook her head. "Men." she said bitterly. Mary nodded vehemently in agreement.
