Road Trip, Day Eight
* * *
When they went for their usual breakfast run the next morning, Dean caught Sue's arm next to the car.
"Wait here with me? I wanna talk."
Sam and Mary exchanged worried looks. Sue nodded at Mary, indicating that the two of them should go ahead.
Once Mary had reluctantly allowed Sam to drag her along, away from the car, Dean cleared his throat awkwardly. "So..I, uh...I know things pretty much suck, right now. I mean, being...really awkward, 'n all - y'know?"
Sue raised her eyebrows. "Y'think?" The corner of Dean's mouth twitched into a smirk. Sue didn't know if she wanted to kiss him, or punch him.
Dean leaned back against the car, folding his arms. "What I'm trying to say is...I get that you're probably...angry, and upset - and you've got every right to be, but..." he held his hands out in a gesture of appeal, shrugging, "...we're on this trip, with Sammy and Mare, and I just...I still want us all to have a good time."
Sue sighed. "Is there a point to this?"
Dean smirked again. "You're not gonna make this easy for me, are you?"
Sue gave him a look, that plainly said: No, DUH.
Dean smiled wryly, shaking his head. He took a breath. "Okay, so what I really AM trying to say, is...I want you and me to...get along, again. I want us to be..." he sighed, "I want us to be friends, I guess?"
Sue felt her heart plod right to the ground. "Friends?" She asked incredulously.
Dean shrugged. "Well, yeah." He gave Sue a frank look. "Think you could...manage that? I dunno...for...their sake," he gestured towards where Sam and Mary had went, "and...for me?"
"Even though you're an ass-hole?"
Dean flinched. "Uh...yeah?"
Sue looked at him - just looked - for several seconds. Dean started to fidgeting under her scrutiny. "You contemplating my murder?"
"Something like that." Sue paused a moment longer. "Okay - I'll try the 'friends' thing - on one condition."
Dean seemed very wary. "Uh-huh?"
"I'll do it...but then you're still sharing a room with me - every night."
Dean seemed surprised, then suspicious. "Why?"
"Just 'cause. Take it or leave it."
Dean sighed. He glanced past Sue, watching as Sam and Mary approached. He scratched the back of his neck. "Alright, fine." He held out his hand to Sue. "Shake on it." Sue gave his hand a dubious look. "C'mon," Dean prompted again.
Sue tutted irritably, but took his hand. Dean grinned at her as they sealed the deal.
Sue felt like vomiting.
When Sam and Mary got to the car, Mary nudged Sue when the boys were out of ear-shot. "So?"
"We're 'friends' now." Sue said, looking ill.
Mary's shoulders slumped. "Oh, God."
"Yeah. I know."

Road Trip, Day Nine
* * *
Sam had caught wind of a vintage car show, in one of the towns they were passing through. So now here the girls were, sitting at a picnic table opposite each other, while the boys were walking among the cars, speaking to various owners and such.
Both Sue and Mary were watching Dean and Sam, respectively, with glum expressions on their faces.
"We should...do something." Sue suddenly said.
Mary frowned at her. "What d'you mean?"
"I mean...to distract us from all this...emo stuff. You and me - we should DO something."
Mary's expression was blank. "Ah...any suggestions?"
Sue eyed Mary speculatively. "As a matter of fact, yes."
Mary raised an eyebrow. "Do tell."
"We should go on a shopping spree."
Mary stared at Sue disbelievingly for several seconds. "Did you steal Dean's bottle of Jack, or something?"
"I'm serious. I mean, bored housewives, pissed-off girlfriends - everyone does it - shopping to cure depression. We've never tried it, so...maybe it's just what we need."
"We're not bored housewives, or pissed-off girlfriends."
"No, but we ARE bored AND pissed-off. Well...I am, anyway." After a few moment's silence, she spoke again. "But it's SO not just about me. I mean...look at you."
Mary looked down at herself, confused and indignant, "What about me?!"
Sue gave her a 'come on' kind of look. "Please - you're still wearing your fat clothes."
It was true. Mary's shorts hung to her knees, REALLY baggy, the drawstring pulled tight to keep them from falling off.
"Okay, I see your point, but...uh...WHERE d'you wanna do this shopping? I mean, in case you haven't noticed, we're not exactly in..."
"Vegas." Sue suddenly interrupted.
Mary scrunched up her face in confusion. "Huh?"
"I heard Dean and Sam talking this morning. Dean mentioned something about passing through Vegas, like, tomorrow, at the latest, if they take another route, or something."
"Uh, I don't mean to be a kill-joy, but...d'you really want Dean anywhere NEAR Vegas - what with all the potential female distraction you KNOW there'll be, 'n all?"
Sue glanced over at the boys. Her expression turned hard. "Y'know, frankly I don't give a shit WHAT Dean does. I just want you and me to go a little nuts, for a change. 'Cause I seriously believe we BOTH need it."
Mary considered it. "Yeah - you're right."
"So...Vegas it is?"
"Guess so."
