research paper

Hi. I'm writing a research paper on Tibet and destruction of religion as a means of social control. Does anyone know any good articles that might help? Specifically, on religious sites and figures being, literally or figuratively, raped? Thank you so much in advance.

Hm, not sure about the raping thing, but in Afghanistan there were millenia-old Buddhist statues that were wrecked by the Taliban. Maybe you could do some compare and contrast there...? Good luck.

I'm reminded of a book I read for a class on violence - Sensory Biographies by Robert Desjarlais. It's mostly about death, but the focus is on the elderly and their religion.

Hide your religious sites, hide your Tibetan figures, because the Chinese military are raping everybody out here.

China comes to mind.. so does Russia.

You could probably use any article written by Karl Marx on religion. He believed it was there to control the masses. If I remember correctly anyways..

"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."

I'm sure it'd be easy to find, especially in the Chinese case, the attacks on Buddhist, Confucian, and Taoist sites during the Cultural Revolution.

For the use of religion as social identity, control, and a form of rebellion, Korea comes to mind.
