Have any of you found that you really wanted to study a particular culture but were too uneasy (for your health or personal safety) to travel to that country to do fieldwork?  Such as having an interest in Darfur or Iraq.

cultural anthropology, fieldwork

Not for fieldwork nessesarily, as i'm not an anthropologist, but for my own learning and curiosity.. I'd really like to tour Iran. I'm hoping (and i do believe) that I will be able to eventually.

Iran's piqued my interest lately.. But I'd love to go to Cuba, North Korea, etc.

Yes, in fact, despite finishing the degree I ended up basically being an historian/sociologist of deviance/studying American prison inmates for many reasons (interest for one, the desire not to be shot at, fascination with crime/deviance, and the biggie... coming from an immigrant family fairly new to the US and having probably less than optimal desire to travel and stay more than one year in another country) ... as I get older I really enjoy traveling and can see living in another country for years, but the politics of fieldwork are complex and being from a huge family just situated in the US the romance of being adopted into yet another huge complex kin group just didn't have the allure, especially after a few pre field visits... although time travel does... as does science fiction!
