Campaign Larps and Characters

May 23, 2012 23:05

Hello, first livejournal post!

I got this thing to read about larps and talk about larps and generally do larpy things, so keeping with that theme, here are the characters I apped for the campaign larp being constructed by darkoni42,bleemoo, staystrong62805, and beholdsa, jingsaw, gower, and landicine. Needless to say, I am all kinds of excited about the writing team for this thing. Right! Where was I? ( Read more... )

I can't blame you there, he's a hell of a fun character. If I get Bruce, and you get Tony, we must be Science Bros.

I much prefer playing characters who have close relationships with one or two other characters where they really care about one another. I didn't think to take that into account when bidding characters for this LARP. In retrospect, I probably should have thought about it and maybe asked other players who they were bidding. I don't think many of the characters I bid are likely to have other people playing characters canonically close to them. I particularly like playing siblings (dear brother) and the sidekick half of a mentor-sidekick team (so long as the sidekick isn't useless and/or just a copy of the mentor, but weaker, with no plot of their own.) I guess I'm hoping there will be some close relationships written into the LARP that aren't canonical? Or at least that some will develop?

Or rewritten Canon to create bonds between people that weren't there Canonically. Like, if he was playing Dean (for example), we might write in a character to play his little brother, since, canonically, Dean has a Little Brother that he looks out for and this is Very Important to his character. It might not be his Canonical little brother, but he will have a little brother.

Yeah, that sounds like a good way to do it! You can keep the important tropes of a character, even if you swap in one character for another, and in a way that can make things more interesting.

The most fun part about playing in a panfandom game is seeing the cross-canon ships and relationships that form. In my LJRP, my witch from the Black Jewels series is dating Warren Worthington III, is Black Canary's adopted little sister, is mentored by Ghanima Atreides, and pals around with Ender and Ben Skywalker.

I'm also a big fan of close connections in LARPs. I think partnerships have the best chance of working out, since you have goals in common, but I love them all.

Oddly enough, some of my best LARP experiences have been ones where I've had a public rivalry with someone. The specific nonspoilery examples I'm thinking of are LoB II (I was a member of the Sharks, Veronica was a member of the Jets, and we spent the entire game fighting and messing with each other) and my recast in Dragon (loud and angry Dragon who is not shy about yelling at people, whoever they might hpapen to be). I tend to want to get paired with people who I know will contribute as much energy to the interaction as I do!

Really, I think I actually summed it up best in my last sentence - the type of interpersonal dynamics I like to see are high-energy ones, regardless of whether they're foe, rival, friend, or ally.

Hullo, Chris! Yes, I remembered that from... I don't even know where, but I remembered the username!

And yeah, I concur, having high energy relationships is a lot of fun! It lets you know that the other person is getting just as into this as you are. I have a feeling for a long-term campaign larp, though, we'll need relationships that are a tad more stable. I mean, I'm generally a dude with lots of energy, but even I'm not sure I could keep it up all day!

You probably remember the username from Skype!

Also the last phrase you used in your comment, the jokes just make themselves. :p
