It's the design, really. The drawer fronts sticks up an inch or more above the top edge of the opening. That means the next drawer needs to be an inch further up. They're using sliding mechanisms in the sides that adds up to 1/2" on each side. On some designs, those sliders are fastened to 1/2" or even 1" thick wood that has been nailed to 1" uprights
