Don't worry, I'm sure there'll be more later if not sooner!

Yes, there's so much at this stage that Horatio is blithely unaware of.

Glad you enjoyed :)

Nice! For anyone who has read Parkinson's "Life and Times of Horatio Hornblower... he seemed to imply that Horatio might have first served on Arethusa with Pellew and then moved with him to Indy. Also, in that version of the HH story, it's Hornblower who makes the point about re-masting Indy to carry her original spars.

I was just looking at The Life and Times the other day to check that detail about the re-masting of the Indy. Parkinson has a bit of a cheek actually, in his biography of Pellew, he maintains that the experience Pellew gained from building ships with Schank on Lake Champlain had nothing to do with his later request to have the Indy's masts were replaced. Yet in The Life and Times he credits Hornblower's understanding of ship building, and subsequent suggestion that the masts should be replaced, to spending time with a carpenter who worked with .... Schank!

This is brilliant! You captured Archie's excitement and Horatio's anxiety beautifully. It is almost a bit heart-rending knowing Archie's initial stay on the Indy is going to be cut short so.

Late as usual *sigh*
Loved this. It is such a perfect "fit" between "We fortunate few ...", and the grinning Archie in the the transfer boat with Horatio on the way to the Indy.
Chuckled over the way Archie wound Horatio up about being carpeted by Ned Pellew, also the "taut fist" / "taut hand" lines.
