Thanks for commenting! I'm really glad someone took the time to actually read me ramble about two of my favorite nerd-out subjects (queer theory and Star Trek)!

Luckily it happens to be one of my favorite nerd out subjects too. I very much agree with you too. Sexuality should really be more ambiguous to the individual and instead of being set in stone. I think that's what will happen in the 23rd century too, but change happens slowly. I'm not sure it'll happen now unfortunately, it's the next civil change.

Yeah, and the issue here is just as much about gender identity and hetero-patriarchal constructs of masculinity/femininity as well...it's all very nuanced. Because I surround myself with open-minded people I sometimes forget how rigid the mainstream world is.

...but we always have queer theory and subversive fanfic to tide us over in the meantime :)

for all the things i read about rodemberry he always wanted a gay couple in star trek, because it was part of the humanity, but producers never let him, even after his death it was promised to his wife that in Enterprise it will be a homosexual lead character (the english one Malcom Reed, 7 of 9 of voyager was a promised lesvian too ( ... )

Yeah, I've heard all that abotu Roddenbury. I never have really cared much what an author/creator's intention was with the work. I mean it's nice to keep in mind, but ultimately it's what is rationally defensible from the text that counts. It is cool that Roddenbury was open minded, though!

I DO see Jim as a bit of a player. But there's nothing wrong with that! I'd like to think in the 23rd century there would no longer be a stigma on promsicuity, and people would recognize there's nothing at all wrong with being a slut. And just because Jim was a slut at first doesn't mean he couldn't be a monogamist with Spock later, if that's the ship which floats your boat<3 (which is my head canon for the TOS Spirk ( ... )
