Mini-Apple Trees

Aug 11, 2011 11:05

Probably time for an update on how the wee tiny apples are doing.

Like most children, they couldn't be more different than night and day.

Let me show you my counter-top arboretum. )

It'll be interesting to see what the apples are like, eventually, since there's no guarantee you'll get Pink Ladies.

Yeah! There's no guarantee that I'll even get fruit, much less edible, but I'm having fun watching them grow. They're so completely different!

Apples are amazing- they mix up all their genes when they produce seeds, so the offspring is never the same as the parent and usually completely different from one another. Sounds like me and my siblings, actually... ;D I'm so happy Fiona and her kin are thriving! If I tried that, they'd put up two leaves and die pondering the futility of it all.

We're foggy and grey here, too. Typical when there's a meteor shower I want to watch. Boo!

It does! My siblings and I are the same in that we're completely different, too. ;) Funny how that works.

lol, so you'd have emo apples?

Never fails, those cloudy skies. Here's to hoping we can get a glimpse tonight.

I'll still take it over triple digit heat.

They thank you kindly. *hugs*

Oh! I completely forgot I have some appleseeds in the fridge! They're from a wild apple tree I came across two years ago that has the most wonderful apples. I think it'll be appling again this year, it seems to throw fruit every other year. There are a lot of wild apple trees where I live, because this is old mining communities and farms. WHen the mines closed, the people left and left the farms to go wild. Hence, lots of strange, heirloom apple trees, lilacs and raspberries to pick through.

Which reminds me, I also have heirloom peach pits and some red oak acorns I need to plant as well...

Did you need to score the seeds before planting them?

Ooh, how lovely! That sounds excellent. I miss having fruit trees around. We had a small orchard when I was a kid. Plum, apple and peach. I miss it.

I didn't, actually, bc when I cut into the apple, I noticed a couple of the seeds had already begun to sprout. Perhaps soak them in water for a few days first? I did. I dropped them in a ziploc baggy on the sill to watch them sprout a bit more before putting them in soil.

Good luck!

Siblings can be so different. ;)

Oooh...that reminds me that I need to take a picture of my miniature garden. It's been a little unhappy in all the heat, but I think 75% of it is still alive.

True, true.

Ooh, yes you should. This is office garden, and the one at home just got severely pruned back to get ready for fall. While the heat hasn't been anything comparable here, we've had zero rain, which is typical. so most of the pretty purples and pinks are all but gone.

Post, post, post!
