Mini-Apple Trees

Aug 11, 2011 11:05

Probably time for an update on how the wee tiny apples are doing.

Like most children, they couldn't be more different than night and day.

Remember the little trees I started back around March or so? It started with Fiona Apple - a pink lady seed I planted on a whim.

This is Fiona now.

Here is her progression.

Shortly after Fiona sprouted, I learned that in order to get any sort of fruit (assuming all bastardization from hybrids and whatnot even proved fruitful) I'd need another tree to bonk heads with it to encourage pollination. So, I planted another pink lady seed, from a different apple, to be its mate.

Meet Barkley.

Now, I know what you're thinking. Even before you say it, just know that I turned both of these little guys multiple times a day, every day, to encourage even leaf spreadage. Despite this, Barkley decided to grow in one damn contrary direction and there's nothing I can do about it.

So, look at them. They are both pink lady seeds yet could not be more adorably different.

Fiona is very prim, her leaves are gathered coquettishly close to her pink trunk, and she furls ever so delicately with bright, vivid leaves.

Barkley seems to be a total boy, and has bold, deep green leaves, spread out just as far and wildly as he pleases, with a jaunty tilt to his non-pink axis.

I love them.

Here is the mini-garden I'm growing on the table next to The Great Big Window overlooking the Bay.

Note the drinking glass of vines. Lo', I am Saver of the Spare Cuttings. They will be transplanted into a pot at home soon. The violets in the tiniest pot are a complete mess and just need to be thrown away already. :/ I have some forget-me-nots to put in their place.

Bonus: Weather Report. Today in the Bay it is:

Foggy and grey.

Otherwise known as typical.
