Being on the wrong side of the pond, I've only seen the first four episodes of Series 5. (The temptation to acquire others is strong within me, though, particularly given what I've heard about them improving.) Moffat's strong suit was never, and apparently will never be, subtle characterisation. That's RTD's speciality.
Though as I've gotten to know Amy a bit better, I've actually found that that's not such a good thing as I am sort of deciding that I don't like her. Which pains me because I have loved all the new Who companions to ridiculous amounts.
And then there's this whole tone of "If you think you know what's going on and who these people are, well, we've got 85 tricks up our sleeve and by the end of the season your mind will be blown and you'll have been totally wrong." Which: no. I hate that. It's a cop-out dressed up as being clever. Let me get to know these characters organically instead of purposefully being ~mysterious~ and witholding all the important information so you can go "HA HA FOOLED YA!" at the end of the series.
