What I'm Reading Wednesday

So let's see if doing a weekly book post can get my brain into blogging in a slightly longer form than Twitter & Tumblr...

What I'm Reading Now

The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith - I'm only about 100 pages into this, but I'm kind of loving it.  JKR has such a gift for describing people in unflattering terms but making them incredibly ( Read more... )

Wednesday Reading Meme! I've found it super helpful to have a weekly place to deposit my thoughts about books.

Also I am a bit envious that you have a mystery seminar, although perhaps not so much, given what they're making you read. Is it a seminar about writing mystery novels, or the history of mystery novels, or what?

I just finished The Cuckoo's Calling and have a post about it knocking about, so perhaps I will save that a few days so I can chat about it with you! I'm definitely hoping that Rowling writes more mystery novels; I think her strengths are really well suited to the genre.

It's a readers' advisory seminar - the presenters will be talking about types & varieties of mysteries and readalike factors to consider when recommending - which is great because I don't really read many mysteries on my own, and while I'm fairly familiar with new ones, mystery backlists are just a complete, uh, mystery for me.

I'm not entirely sure I'd consider Leonard Peacock a mystery, but we'll see.

Talking about Cuckoo's Calling sounds like a lot of fun! I hope I'll get it done before the weekend so I can binge on mysteries then. I absolutely agree that Rowling is a natural mystery writer.

YAY books!

I am super excited about Allegiant, even though I also liked Insurgent much less than Divergent. Still looking forward to seeing how it all ends. I want to get that, and House of Hades soon. Oh, and I also would like to finally read both A Casual Vacancy and Cuckoo's Calling.

Have you read any Scalzi? I'm currently almost done with The Android's Dream and it is ridiculous and fantastic.

Yeah, I had maaaaaaaaajor problems with Insurgent. But Allegiant's release was pushed back by 9 months or so thus I'm hoping that Roth had more time to figure out how to make it all work. I need to get House of Hades soon too, but I actually haven't read MoA yet, and I'm kind of sick of Riordan's cliffhangers so I might just wait until next year.

I haven't read anything of his other than his essays & blog! I always MEAN to, but I just haven't yet.

I don't remember my problems with Insurgent I just remember not liking it nearly as much as Divergent. As you say, hopefully the extra time helped.

I liked MoA a lot, although yes- big cliffhanger. Heh.

Just finished The Android's Dream this morning. Super fun and creative. Definitely recommend!
