So let's see if doing a weekly book post can get my brain into blogging in a slightly longer form than Twitter & Tumblr...
What I'm Reading Now
The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith - I'm only about 100 pages into this, but I'm kind of loving it. JKR has such a gift for describing people in unflattering terms but making them incredibly interesting. I have absolutely no idea what's going to happen, but there's plenty of book left.
Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick - I need to read this by next Friday for a mystery seminar I'm attending. However I've had this book for about 3 weeks, and I just can not make myself get past the first 5 pages. I don't want to put myself in the (first person even!) mindset of a guy who is planning to kill his friend then commit suicide. I just don't want to.
Les Misérables: Conversion, Revolution, Redemption by Kathryn Grossman - this is a slender little book that's analyzing Les Misérables' historical and social context. It's incredibly interesting though currently my favorite bit is the argument that Valjean's 24601 number commemorates the DATE OF HUGO'S CONCEPTION. Sadly she provided no citation for that bit, but it sounds like something Hugo would do.
What I Just Finished Reading
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell - I read the ARC of this a while back, but I really wanted to reread the finished product. I still love it but it felt more unsettling the second time around. I could feel Cath's anxiety more viscerally. Also I have a lot to say about being the child of a mentally ill parent & how well Rowell nailed it, but that's for another time.
What I'm Reading Next
Gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Faye & A Killing in the Hills by Julia Keller for that seminar next Friday. The readings for the historical fiction MOOC. Allegiant by Veronica Roth because I didn't like Insurgent so much but have to finish the trilogy!
