in those kits where you trace the pattern with the roll-y thing, if they have just a single poker then use that to poke the pattern into the pumpkin. i've found it works better to just stab a single hole at a time at the pattern rather than trying to use the roller which always doesn't go in deep enough so you can see the pattern.
And animals sitting upright are unfailingly funny, for some reason. My Briar-kitty always liked to sit upright in chairs. This was the closest I ever got to capturing that on film, though:
