Why did I think it was a good idea to drive to Whole Foods at rush hour, in the first rainstorm we've had in weeks, in order to buy yams for Thanksgiving? I suspect myself of sleep deprivation, or possibly excess giddiness from the fact that MY CHARACTERS ARE ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING BESIDES ANGSTING AROUND TALKING ( Read more... )

Sex in space. I so wanna read that.

I'm gonna try making marshmallow from scratch with kuzu rather than gelatin (since I don't eat meat gelatin is out of the question). I'll let you know how it goes.

Ooh, interesting! My brother-in-law makes marshmallows but I think he uses gelatin. I'll be really curious to hear how that turns out!

Hah, yes! Although I'm beginning to think the most epic thing about it is the epic amount of time it's taking me to finish. :D

Haha, that's perfectly fine by me! Take your sweet time on it!

When I found out you were writing a follow-up to Like the Stars, I almost had a heart attack. Like the Stars is one of my favorite stories and I am constantly reading it.

Ugh, and now I find out there is space sex!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think I can get enough of Spock and Nyota.

So, in short, I stalk your blog. Hope that's not too creepy.

maybe it is a little.

Dude I'm stalking so many people, you don't even know! Totally not creepy....I hope. :D

I'm so glad to hear that Like the Stars is one of your favorites! It was totally a labor of love for me--for the characters and for the subject. It makes me happy to know that other people have gotten similar enjoyment from it. :D

I'm still trying to figure out how much it's socially acceptable to love my own work. But I kind of, uh, love that one a scary amount. But I didn't say that.

Thanks for the encouragement on the space sex! Every story needs more of it, imo!

Space sex is kind of the greatest.

I also have to immediately love posts that combine space sex and science and marshmallows. Just FYI.

Space sex is kind of the greatest.

TRUE FACT. :)

I think setting myself a WriSoMiFu goal of posting daily has been really good for my posting habits. I used to wait until I had something scintillating (hah) to say before posting. Now I'm like, huh, those fish marshmallows were really strange...let's talk about them along with the space sex!

Yay, sex! \o/

Meatpacking industry &ndash I read Fast Food Nation and if I hadn't been a convinced vegetarian before, that would've made me one. Blergh. OTOH, many, many fish species are overfished these days, most ways fishing are disruptive to marine ecosystems and farming methods are not that much better in many cases... of course, fish gelatin is presumably a byproduct of the whole process so not the main culprit in any way but yeah.

Your tagline (science, it works, bitches!) now has me wondering what a science-based sex approach would look like. Gaila would probably know.

I saw the documentary Food, Inc. a few months ago and it was so sobering about the meatpacking industry. I mean, I already knew it was horrible but I didn't realize things like, the US used to have hundreds of meat packers, and now in the entire country there are 14. To produce the amount of meat we consume at 14 plants means the scale of the operations is unbelievable! And correspondingly environmentally destructive, dehumanizing, inhumane, etc. Some of our states have passed laws making it illegal to publish photos of meatpacking operations, because they know if people saw what it was really like they wouldn't eat the product.

We basically only eat locally-sourced meat from small farms now, which means we eat meat rarely. Less than once a week, I'd say. We are, however, extremely destructive to the local vegetable population. :)

Have you ever seen the fanart piece that has Spock wearing the "Science, it Works, Bitches" T-shirt? It was so cute! I want that shirt even though I have a weird paranoia that if I wore it ( ... )

Wow. That is... insane.

I think standards are a little better here in Germany &ndash for instance, we don't seem to have the rates of food poisonings the US has &ndash but reading all about the treatment of the workers, the vastly unhygienic working conditions etc. was massively off-putting. I think my reading of that book might have coincided with my short period of veganism but I'm not sure anymore, been a while.

Ah, so you're part-time vegetarians? ;-) That's cool, especially the meat sources. Sometimes, I feel bad about the eggs I buy &ndash from free-range chickens and eco-certified labels but not from a local farm. Am just too lazy. *sigh*

No, I haven't seen it. Do you have the link? *curious* As far as fun t-shirts go, I've seen the hilarious Kirk and Spock as tourists [click to see the full pic] by juneinblue, in which Spock wears a ( ... )

OMG I can't believe how quickly I found this!

That painting with the whale-watching t-shirt is great. The artist calls it a drawing--I wonder what media she uses? Anyway you've persuaded me to love her with your persistent linking. Her Spock is--rrr.

PS Don't feel bad about your eggs! There are always trade-offs--better to get free-range and cage-free than local but cruel, right? We just have the luxury of getting local humane meat because we live in a major city with a strong "local food" culture. They bring it to us, basically. If we had to go to farms to get our eggs and meat we'd probably be vegans by now!
