Why did I think it was a good idea to drive to Whole Foods at rush hour, in the first rainstorm we've had in weeks, in order to buy yams for Thanksgiving? I suspect myself of sleep deprivation, or possibly excess giddiness from the fact that MY CHARACTERS ARE ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING BESIDES ANGSTING AROUND TALKING ( Read more... )

Some of our states have passed laws making it illegal to publish photos of meatpacking operations

Wow. That is... insane.

I think standards are a little better here in Germany &ndash for instance, we don't seem to have the rates of food poisonings the US has &ndash but reading all about the treatment of the workers, the vastly unhygienic working conditions etc. was massively off-putting. I think my reading of that book might have coincided with my short period of veganism but I'm not sure anymore, been a while.

Ah, so you're part-time vegetarians? ;-) That's cool, especially the meat sources. Sometimes, I feel bad about the eggs I buy &ndash from free-range chickens and eco-certified labels but not from a local farm. Am just too lazy. *sigh*

Have you ever seen the fanart piece that has Spock wearing the "Science, it Works, Bitches" T-shirt?

No, I haven't seen it. Do you have the link? *curious* As far as fun t-shirts go, I've seen the hilarious Kirk and Spock as tourists [click to see the full pic] by juneinblue, in which Spock wears a whalewatching t-shirt.

OMG I can't believe how quickly I found this!

That painting with the whale-watching t-shirt is great. The artist calls it a drawing--I wonder what media she uses? Anyway you've persuaded me to love her with your persistent linking. Her Spock is--rrr.

PS Don't feel bad about your eggs! There are always trade-offs--better to get free-range and cage-free than local but cruel, right? We just have the luxury of getting local humane meat because we live in a major city with a strong "local food" culture. They bring it to us, basically. If we had to go to farms to get our eggs and meat we'd probably be vegans by now!

Wheee, thank you for linking that! I'd totally forgotten about the t-shirt. *facepalm* So lovely to go look at that artwork again. :-)

juneinblue uses a programme called Corel Painter, I seem to remember from the comments when someone asked her the same question. (I can't help it, I love her fanart so much.)

Welll, this is a medium-sized town surrounded by farmland with a long, long tradition of farming so I'm sure I'd find a good source but it's somehow much more convenient to just pop into the supermarket or into the whole foods supermarket... or at most, go to the local farmers' market. Ah well, we all make our compromises. ;-)

And... regarding another thread above about how socially acceptable it is to love (or even take credit) for your own work, this article by a well-known knitting blogger/writer might be of interest. In short: I'd say yes! Most women aren't in danger of lauding themselves excessively anyway, more the opposite. *is working on that issue herself*

Thanks for that link to the knitting article. Which prompts me to ask, do you knit? I do! *knits something quickly as a demo* See?

I do in fact knit but not in a designing way. I simply knit up simple scarves and simple replacement jumpers for myself in the way that looks likely to produce the desired result. Once my exam is finished, the plan is to spend many a lovely evening knitting away while listening to ZQ's reading of the ST novelisation. Mmmhmm... I read that blog mostly for the fun and sometimes for the knitting motivation. What's your knitting like? :-)

Hmm, did someone just self-deprecate her knitting just like someone was just talking about in that blog? :D I've done a lot less knitting since I started writing, but mostly I like to design things. The only company whose patterns I consistently like is Rowan. Sometimes I'll actually knit one of their sweaters instead of just ogling the patterns and then spending another $20 on the next issue!

Basically my current situation is I have a closet half-full of yarn and I'm spending all my time writing Spock epic! Speaking of which, they're having oral sex right now so I should go get back to it. ;P Will post more about knitting later, though! I have multiple WIPs that need to be finished & possibly posting about it will light a fire under me. Or just be embarrassing, but I'm starting to like the embarrassing potential of this journal!

Well, mine really are straight up in garter stitch (?). Partly because I'm too cheap for patterns... my mother is the same. Sometimes, I crib write-ups from her and adjust for my size.

I'd love to hear about your WIPs, knitting and otherwise, but yeah, you can't leave them hanging mid-oral sex! Gaila would severely disapprove. *nudges your muse*
