I was too busy going 'wait, what?' at the Spock/Uhura to have any opinions at all on its hotness or lack thereof. And you know I am an enormous sucker for inflicting romance plots on emotionally repressed characters, but it came so far out of left field that I just couldn't believe it for a second and for most of the first kissing scene I was trying to figure out where Uhura's sudden invasion of Spock's personal space was coming from.
Maybe if they'd set it up. At all. :/
Also the gender stuff bummed me out. I thought it was a very fun movie in spite of these issues, though.
I'm a lot more lenient on setup for romance subplots in movies than I am in books and series--partly because of time constraints and partly because the setup for romance in action movies has become almost oppressively formulaic and I am heartily sick of it, so I welcome any variation from it, even in the form of chucking out most of the setup altogether.
I would have liked more scenes with them, but their brief scene together prior to the kissing gave me enough chemistry to be reasonably satisfied.
Fair enough. I think I just require more setup, especially with characters of Spock's type. But who knows, since there's likely to be at least one sequel, maybe they'll do something with it along the way that'll make it a bit easier for me to wrap my brain around. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing more of the main cast.
Apparently in TOS - I missed this, my observation of TOS is very gappy - there is canon 'Uhura flirts with Spock; the unrequited Spock-crush figure is Nurse Chapel'. So they streamlined it, and also actually let someone get Spock this time, possibly because his daddy said it was okay to love people, really.
