(no subject)
Quick thoughts before I pick up on all the stuff (mostly RP, because I am pretty sad) waiting for me:

Just to get it out of the way first, I'm a little uncomfortable with the fucking around with the continuity. I know this and the regular continuity exist as parallel universes, but that's not Star Trek's normal rule. Star Trek's normal rule, used in approximately a million and one past episodes with maybe three or so exceptions, is that the "new" history overwrites the old, except for the one or two people who happen to be time-travelling. It's hard for me to shake that feeling.
At the same time, though, I'm glad that it wasn't just a straight revisit of the past; it feels like it fits in more with the existing continuity this way, even as it makes me twitch because my instinct is that it's overwriting it.
But still: it was awesome. It perfectly triggered my burning love for all things that simultaneously know they're ridiculous while also being perfectly serious, for epic, unbelievable drama that winks at you just enough to make believing it possible. And that is more than enough for me.
But also: goddamn was the new Spock hot. Basically, all the characters were great. I didn't find myself with the attachment to Kirk that I did to the others, but I didn't mind him, either, and I thought it was clever how they completely changed him while still keeping him so much the same character, right down to the cheating on the Kobayashi Maru.
The gender issues were not perfect. Uhura was the only major female character and she didn't get to do as much as I would have liked (although she got to do a lot more than she did in the original canon), and they totally fridged Spock's mother. But considering what they had to work with, I can't get too worked up about it.
And damn, Uhura/Spock was so hot. I want some more of that.
