re: V for Vendetta

"I've read the screenplay," Mr. Moore said. "It's rubbish."

On the other hand, Alan Moore is nuts.

He's also a genius eccentric comic book author who writes sex scenes into his comics as mystic experiences, so he's sort of entitled.

I say we should just all embrace our nuttiness. Make everyone much happier...

Or make the world worse.

I don't care what Alan Moore thinks. I -still- hope to god V is as awesome as I want it to be.

From what I've seen of the clips, though, there are at least some parts that are 'new'. (millions of V masks? What?)

Oh yeah, I'm definitely still going to see the movie.

I just hope they keep the lesbian. :(

(It's been years since I read the graphic novel, but I still remember the lesbian!)

With stuff by Alan Moore and his ilk, multiple readings do help sometimes, but it may just be a matter of personal preference. If it helps, I've never considered V for Vendetta to be his best work--it was fairly early for him. Things like Watchmen came later.

I personally prefer Moore's "comic book" work like Swamp Thing and Promethea to his Serious Business "graphic novel" work like V for Vendetta and Watchmen, myself. I tend to find his comic book characters more engaging (obviously, since a character created by him in such a circumstance became my favorite character ever) and his visual story-telling more deft.

I'm seeing it tonight. I'll let you know.

I don't have high hopes, because the Wachowski brothers had a hand in it, and the Matrices sucked. Plus, it wasn't Alan Moore's best - still cool, but a bit overbearing.

Heh heh, you said "Matrices."

The actual correct pluralization!

...and you know, I've still never seen the second and third movies in that trilogy. I take it it's not worth the effort?

I almost just said "The Matrix" and just imply the whole trilogy with that, but I felt I needed to really stress just how the black-hole-of-suck shit-assed godawful bullshittery really gobbled chode scrapings. The first Matrix was just unfuckingbelievably overrated. The second and third movies made most people realize why.

Not sure if it's 'choad' or 'chode.' But no. Unless you're in the mood for stretched out and empty-headed pseudo-philosophizing and then watching someone else play a video game.

That's pretty much how I felt about the first Matrix. "Hey, fun action flick, shiny effects--what the fuck? What's this about 'redefining the genre' and 'best movie ever' and 'zomg so deep'? Sci-fi has been doing this sort of plot for decades, and usually they do it better! Get over yourselves!"

And then came the stuff about Keanu Reeves playing Constantine, and I became so disgusted with him (even though it wasn't really his fault and I hear he's a nice guy) that I refused to watch anything else with him in it, so I missed out on the sequels, and as far as I can tell, I was lucky.
