Even though it only took him about two steps to reach the door, in that span of distance, he knew something was up. James wasn't supposed to be here, it was Lily's birthday, the day he'd been planning for. But he was at Sirius's door, his voice sounding cracked. Not a part of the plan, not even close.
Sirius swung open the door and stood aside, leaving space for James to walk in. Disposing of greetings, Sirius asked in a low voice, "What happened to Venice?" He doubted the answer was good, if James was here and not with Lily.

"She's gone," he growled, voice low. His tone had taken on an odd timbre, one it had taken in the past only when faced with a Death Eater or other evil. A dangerous tone. "Dinner. With fucking Snivellus. Left me a lovely little note."
He wanted to follow her. He wanted to curse Snape into oblivion. He'd even, at the moment, risk Lily's undying hatred for the chance to Avada Kedavra the fucker back to the other side of the Door where he belonged.
As he paced, he breathed heavily, almost hyperventilating in his upset.

What on earth had Lily been thinking? Sirius wasn't sure what to make of the fact that she felt like spending her birthday in the house of another man; it might have just been because they were friends, or because she had thought James wouldn't plan something, but that wasn't how it looked. Instead, it simply reeked of something more than just friendship. And if that was how it seemed to Sirius, he could only imagine that the thought was completely consuming James.
"Did she know you were taking her out?" Sirius asked, feeling helpless to stop his friend's anger. Not that it wasn't well-deserved. Sirius just hoped Lily hadn't gone over to Snape's knowing full well that her husband had made plans; that would only make things ten times worse.
