Zach had spent most of the day putting up secondary wards around the merchant areas at the outdoor market. The day had gone quickly and even though the work was slow going, it kept him busy and he felt like he was accomplishing something. The money wasn't bad either and it seemed merchants were willing to pay top dollar for security. Plus, the residual contracts to reinforce his charmwork would keep he, Tracey and Luna well-supported while they were here. It had ended up being a larger job than he thought and he was normally at the market from the early morning until mid-afternoon Monday through Friday which meant that Tracey and Luna were home alone for the most part although one or the other came with him sometimes and every day he came home, he was glad to see that no one had been maimed while he was gone ( ... )

Tracey chopped the vegetables, trying very hard to keep her hands from shaking as she did so. Luna, pregnant. It was almost too much to comprehend. Tracey's hand slipped, and she yelped as she cut her finger. Pulling away, she went to the wink, running the offended appendage under the running water before getting a paper towel and pressing down hard to stop the bleeding ( ... )

He didn't notice Tracey's reticence or nervousness until he was standing behind her. Zach wondered what had happened and for a moment, he thought she was having a relapse, her memories somehow drifting back to her time with John. But she'd been doing so well and he didn't see someone as strong as Tracey allowing herself to fall back into that trap.

"You cut yourself again." He lifted her hand and took the paper towel off her finger before taking out his wand, casting a quick healing charm on her digit. "Honestly, you need to be more careful." Zach scolded but smirked to show he was teasing.

As he kissed her finger, a troubled haze crossed her features, her mind elsewhere and he was about to ask what had happened when she told him to check on Luna. He placed his head on her shoulder, not wanting to leave Tracey alone and tilted his lips toward her, kissing Tracey on the cheek. "I'll go in a minute. But I need to know if everything okay with you?"

Tracey saw his concern and knew she was worrying him. That was reassuring in and of itself. Tracey smiled a little as he tended to her cut, glad that he still showed so much care for her. "Well, love. Making dinner is a very dangerous business. You should try it sometime." She kissed his cheek, calming herself and playing cool. It wasn't really deception, because he would find out what was bothering her in about five minutes anyway.

It was loyalty to Luna. That was even stranger though, because she didn't even really like Luna.

After she told him to check on Luna, he was surprised when he didn't leave right away. She turned her head and met his mouth with her own, kissing him softly. "I'm fine. It's Luna you should see." Then she raised her hand and cupped his cheek. "I'll be here when you're done, if you need me."

Then Tracey turned away and went back to making dinner."

He listened to her, sharing a small smile with Tracey. Zach nodded at her words, knowing the sincerity of her words. She'd helped to change him for the better, at least he had changed with Tracey and Luna. He guessed that's what love did to him although he still didn't like people in general ( ... )

Tracey smiled at him a little, her fingers running along his shoulders. When he said she was over her head, she gave a wry smile and shook her head. "No, I'm just in at my head. I'll let you know when I start to drown." Tracey felt that in this, she had an advantage over Luna. She understood Zach. They spoke on the same language and the same wavelength. Tracey wanted him to know that. Wanted him to know that she would try to be the one to be his harbor and stability.

"I'm a pretty good barmaid, love. The pay's decent and it's honest work. Not like what I used to do." He looked hesitant a moment and Tracey fell silent, watching him carefully. When he did speak, she kept silent for a long moment before raising her eyebrows, disbelief etched on her face. "Where are we going to get the money for that?" Even more fundamental, what kind of business would she open? That required a lot of thought. "What kind of business would I even start?"

"I'll be there then." He answered, knowing that he'd be relying on her sooner than later. Zach stepped into her, nudging her legs apart with his own. "I don't know what I'd do without you. That's why I'll never lose you again." It bothered him to think of life without her and more so when he thought about what he'd almost lost. That's why he was so protective of her and watched over her as much as he could ( ... )

"I know you will." Tracey leaned into him, her arms wrapping around him and holding him close. It always surprised her how well they fit. The sharpness of his hip in contrast to the soft curve of her thigh. The way her arms pressed into the curve in his sides. The way her blue eyes met his brown eyes. How her dark hair so contrasted with his blonde hair. It didn't seem like it would work, the seeming opposites, but it did, and Tracey never wanted to let go. "I'm not going anywhere Zach, even if Luna pops out half-sneazle children. I'll still be here." There was security in his affirmation, and every time he said it, she felt safer ( ... )
