After another day at work, James had come home to another drink. He didn't drink much, not as much as Sirius anyway, but he did usually have one or two at home now. The drinks didn't help him forget Lily's abandonment, but did lessen the pain for a little while ( ... )

James looked like his dog had just died, and that dimmed some of the enthusiasm she had felt at seeing him again. There was really no making the assumption that everybody who had been given a second chance was glad for it - but she was basing judgement of his mindset on a single look in a single moment. Bad days didn't mean being back was a bad thing. But since she didn't think she managed to malign a dead man while lost in herself in St. Mungo's, she didn't think the morose look and greeting was due to her own presence ( ... )

Though he didn't act like it, James really was glad to see her. Frank and Alice Longbottom had shared certain similarities with himself and Lily that had made them easy to get along with, being another young couple with a young child, and a son at that. They'd just been starting a friendship that might have become close and been long-lived had things not gone as they had.

Murdered. She was right, no use in just saying they'd died when murdered was the entire truth. Murdered by the Dark Wizard who'd been defeated in the end by James' own son. Knowing what he did about Harry's battle against Voldemort, how it had all happened, he felt a surge of pride that was completely out of sync with the situation and conversation ( ... )

It answered her question then, that not all people came through right away, though it seemed she had, at least close enough. Alice wondered when Annwn was 'created', but still - all that really mattered was that it was here now. It hadn't occurred to her though that he might not know what had happened to him, that he really had been dead, but then again neither had she really. But at least he had already gleaned the knowledge from other sources, who'd probably filled him in on pertinent details as it was. For her part, she would have only months of knowledge to offer as it was, given she was as clueless about the rest after ( ... )

It took her aback to hear that, that he had no idea. She was used to the idea that everybody did. Of course he had been dead, gone, and wouldn't have first hand knowledge. And this place wasn't the 'real world'. But she could remember how big a deal it had been when James and Lilly had been killed in their own home - friends or not, for those who had stood the line with them it had been central. And how even now her thoughts were for everybody who they'd fought with back then - though for her part, it somewhat felt like she was living back then. She knew they'd been a little group onto themselves James and his friends, but she thought they'd cared beyond it. But there was no right on her part to be upset, though it didn't stop it from springing up at the realization that maybe nobody except their biological families had really cared ( ... )

James had no doubts in his mind that everyone had cared about her and Frank just as much as they had Lily and himself. If she'd said something, he would have assured her of such. It was just that everyone had been more concerned with telling him about Harry, what Harry had done, what sort of student he'd been, what sort of Quidditch player, how much Harry was like him. And he'd soaked it all up, along with the story of Peter's betrayal. The more he listened to her, though, the more he felt guilty for being so quick to listen to what they told him and not ask about anyone else ( ... )

It wasn't like she was looking to get pissed, but that didn't mean Alice didn't accept the bottle willingly and pour a few fingers into her glass. Talking about it like this, she just wanted the burn, and a little bit of an escape. "Nobody needs firewhiskey," the comment came out more philosophically then it needed to be, "but that doesn't mean it's not welcome every once in awhile ( ... )

There was truth in her words, or truth enough, but James was still all too ready to let her have all the fun. "I've been a little too welcoming to the Firewhiskey lately, if you know what I mean ( ... )
