I think I love you for this. You know that annoying, itchy, feeling of vague dissatisfaction that you can't quite put your finger on? It's been bugging me for the last few weeks. I've attempted quite a few times, but always felt like I wasn't quite getting it. I've haunted the boards over at TWoP hoping to be able to nail it down once and for all, but it all ended up being either samgirl/deangirl skirmishing or waaay too negative/personal or waaay too positive (and still personal.)
But you nailed it, and now that annoying feeling has gone away! Thank you!
Nice review--I felt the same way--found it tremendously compelling, even if I was a little pissed about the short-circuiting of all the Cas plots, in particular.
Excellent point about this season relying more heavily on symbol than the previous seasons--
boys grow out of their self-destroying codependency (which is where I think the Amulet ended up being, not a symbol of their love and shared experiences, which turns out to be the Impala, their Home, but of their toxic big brother-little brother dynamic, and a tool for clinginess -see Castiel searching for god with it-) and go on to lead separate lives. This? Is a brilliant point--both about what the amulent really turned out to mean, and about where the season really left them, able, finally, to separate
( ... )
Oh, wow! look at you, you've already made an icon of it!
I was weary about season six until I a)realized I wasn't ready to part with SPN, and b) JA said at a con that it's the season he's been most exited about since the beginning, based on what the writers have told him. And, since JA can do no wrong, I am going to imitate him and be exited as well XD.
well, snagged an icon :) I wish I could make them, but am clueless.
I forgot to say above just how happy nurse!Dean fic would make me! I kind of see him as psychiatric nurse--the combination of those muscles and nursing skills is hard to come by ;) Oh, the fic that is going to come out of this hiatus!
(have you read rageprufrock's WIP featuring a girl!Dean who's an ER nurse? I don't ever read girl!Dean fic, but I love this author)
in SPN Kripke is God, the Creator, but as previously pointed out this is a God that will both die (reaped by Death/leave his creation to fend for itself, fully formed) and a God that though omniscient and omnipotent, doesn't actually have full control of his own creation.
I liked that point so much. Also, this one:
I think the Amulet ended up being, not a symbol of their love and shared experiences, which turns out to be the Impala, their Home, but of their toxic big brother-little brother dynamic, and a tool for clinginess
Yes, I mean the amulet was clearly never intended to have the significance in the series that the fans gave it, or originally intended to be in the story at all. It's almost like a fanon element that made it into canon. Given where the series was ending, I think that perhaps we have seen the last of it.
Sam wins using his "otherness", and Dean wins using his humanity.
Thank you for all your eloquent, thoughtful metas! You've made me enjoy season five much more than I'd have on my own... and even taught me a thing or two about observation ;-)

Mmmh, psychiatric nurse, you may be on to something there...
Planning on posting on other shows today, including House.
