I KNEW that would have demanded an explanation. XD

The way Shinra talk about their high school days throughout volumes 5 and 6 makes it look like the three of them hang out quite a lot, with Shizuo and Izaya fighting and Shinra watching them from afar. But that might just be Shinra thinking it would be funny to talk about their hatred towards each other as if it were a sort of friendship.

Here Shizuo is not necessarily saying he was friends with or emotionally close to Izaya or Shinra. But I think you can say that to Shizuo these two are in a different "zone" than other people he knew from high school (Kadota, etc.). In volume 2, Narita has a list of people who still remained around Shizuo (as in, not avoiding any contact with him completely) despite knowing him, and Izaya is one of them - in a friends-close-enemies-closer sort of way. (Shinra isn't on the list, by the way, but Celty is.)

I thought it's amazing to see that Shizuo is thinking of Izaya as close... even if he didn't mean it that way... but it's actually quite true... Izaya stayed in his life... even though Shizuo probably doesn't like this at all XD

But after your explanation I can understand that one better~
