Mostly, though, I think this movie couldn't quite decide what it wanted to be. Gritty re-imagining? Artsy-fartsy film? Horror story? Fairytale? Love story? Battle story? In the end, it manages none of them, leaving us with a schizophrenic slog fest.
I felt like it wanted to TELL ALL THE THINGS and then succesfully managed to tell exactly nothing in full.
Basically, Snow White managed to make faces that weren't ever convincing to me (especially that ending what was that even), the Queen stole the show, the Huntsman was scruffy and hot and the Prince... was there? IDK
It was a very pretty movie, I must say. I just wanted so much more from it! (I would have loved an entire movie telling the life of the Queen, with a more satisfying ending for her. Where, I dunno, old age becomes her super power? Or...an entire movie about the bow-women. Oh, YES.)
Man, how disappointing. I was so looking forward to this movie, but then I started seeing reviews that said it was very pretty but very boring. And just... that's too bad. Plus, yeah, like you I was a little leery of this particular fairy tale with the beauty aspect and the old/ugly is evil, young/pure is good. Can't we subvert that?
That might have been part of my problem as well, I was SO looking forward to it. Too high of expectations, I suppose. That always dooms films. (I actually kind of prefer it when I go in expecting absolutely nothing and then get pleasantly surprised.)
These are the kinds of movies where I wonder if the writers/directors/etc have any awareness *at all* what they are propagating.
Well, maybe you can go see it now with low expectations and then slightly enjoy it. Lol.
Aw, sorry. I'm very glad you enjoyed it so much though! Maybe I didn't have my correct goggles on. (Or sometimes, I feel like us ficwriters have this inherent super power when we watch things, not seeing what's in front of us, but the POTENTIAL for storytelling that the new world has provided us with. Or maybe it just hit your buttons. Who knows. Not me!)
Ha. Well, the muddled-ness of the whole thing was one of the big problems, like they couldn't quite decide what exactly they wanted to say. I mean, there's leaving room open for interpretation by the viewers, but then there's leaving them sitting there scratching their heads trying to make something out of it. (Which, fortunately, is what fangirls do best. :)
And Snow White's vague, undefined magic was one of the most annoying things. Were they trying to say great suffering can lead to magic? Because all that seemed to come out of it was that she was so pure and untouched and that made her magical, right up until the moment she stuck a knife in the queen. Lol.
I didn't really plan to go see this, but I was somewhat intrigued by the ads. Now I can skip it with a clear conscience. We just saw The Avengers, which is a perfect summer movie - lots of action, just enough plot to keep it going without making you think too much and lots of eye candy (Chris is in this too, in case you didn't know). I think the only other movie we'll see in the theater this year is The Hobbit.
Yeah, I kind of wish I'd gone to see the Avengers yet again instead. Though, Chris Hemsworth is actually hotter in Snow White. I have a thing for scruff, what can I say. :)
