Dispute the hell out of that bill. Find out what numbers were sending/sent to for the messages.
If you are using bluetooth, disable it. It's possible that someone is using your bluetooth as a gateway.
But there is no way I would pay that bill.
And instead of dishing out the 30 a month for text services, at least on DD's phone set up a text block with ATT - then texts can be neither sent or received on that phone.
And definately don't pay the bill until you feel that you've disputed it to all ends - once you've paid its like saying you agree with the charges. I would also threaten to cancel, might at least get a supervisor or manager to cut the charges in half.
Drop me an email, I used to work in collections for a Cell Phone company (which is ironically now owned by ATT) and can give you a few pointers on how to use your time on the phone with them most effectively.
Like the other two prior comments, I'd huff and puff and resist with all your might. Surely they can provide records as to the numbers used and such? So you can find out who was involved?
Darren is fighting with AT&T right now because when we canceled them and went with T-Mobile last December, they decided not to cancel it and instead charged us for two more months and then sent us to collections. Darren paid the collections but they said we never did. So I will never, ever deal with AT&T and their Death Star of Doom again. T-Mobile might suck in my area but so far the billing has been easy to deal with.
Go David Cook! My mom is in a tizzy waiting for tomorrow night. I hope he does well even though I have a feeling those 'young' voters will outdial the rest of us.
Believe me, I have avoided texting votes!!! And I can't ever seen to get through on my cell, so I've been burning up the redial button on the land line :))

And you would be surprised at how organized and DETERMINE the Word Nerds are right now. We can almost taste a victory for DC. *goes back to flailing*
