Hmmm

So now that her doctor has suggested that Maya is diabetic (or at least insulin resistant), I think I should research a new food plan for my family. Do any of y'all have experience with anything like Glycemic Index or Glycemic Impact diets? Any of them particularly easy to follow and/or have decent recipes ( Read more... )

Bah! I have insulin resistance. I take metformin for it, but it would help if I followed a better diet ( ... )

Thanks for the book rec, Sue. I'll look into it. I'll look for SUGAR BUSTERS FOR KIDS too. ARRRGH. She's always been big - she was 8 lb. 8 oz. at birth and 25# at one year old. She's also hungry maybe an hour after she eats? That sounds very wrong.

You need to get with a registered dietician and have them discuss food with Maya. It's fine to go to the web, and I'm sure the American Diabetes Association has great information about controlling diabetes with diet, but Maya needs to be involved in this lifestyle change, because it's her health. She may be just a kid, but kids with diabetes know how to deal when they are properly trained. It's one thing for Mom to tell her what to do; it's quite another when a doctor tells her that she needs to take control of her diet.

Oh man. I'm afraid we're looking at this with Boy2. So far, our yelling at him to cut back on sweets isn't doing the job. It's time to call in the big guns.

*hugs*

We've already been to the dietician a year or two ago. We've changed a lot of what we eat. I suppose there's more we can change. The biggest issue is how much she eats; she eats too much of EVERYTHING, even healthy stuff. So if she eats low-sugar stuff, if she eats too much (relative to how much exercise she gets) she's going to keep gaining weight.

So Boy2 is chubby also?

We've been reading food labels for the past year and working seriously on lower-sugar stuff. She's gotten used to that stuff pretty well. The big problem is that she eats so much of everything, and that she's hungry an hour after eating.

I'm at the point where we might have to lock up all the food so that only her dad and I can give it to her :( I don't want this to turn into a struggle. I'm going to read SUGAR BUSTERS FOR KIDS as soon as I can find a copy.

All I can say is make SURE you get at LEAST a second opinion on whatever plan your doctor recommends. We have a three-yo who was just diagnosed and I don't care what his doctor says, he's losing weight and has unbelievably low sugar every day, which is, hello, not healthy. Do some research of your own and definitely talk to more than one doctor.

WHAT? I've been out of the loop for over a week now. How is it that Maya may possibly be diabetic? Is that why she is getting sick so much?

Due to her excessive weight and very large belly -- that could be a sign of a pre-diabetic condition. Not sure if that's related to all the sickness; those are mostly respiratory, which would seem to be more related to asthma.
