I have a baby name app that I use on my phone :D And I've been thinking aboutu self publishing my stuff. There are still some reasons that I want to to do trad publishing, but I don't see anything wrong with doing self publishing as well. Do you?

I prefer self-publishing. There's so much "chick lit" out there that mine would sink through the cracks at a publisher and agents don't exactly have the best reputations for returning communication in a timely manner.

If you go through CreateSpace, you can create discount codes. A store in Milwaukee carries my books because I gave them a discount code to order more copies at a lower cost to them than if they ordered them from a trade publisher- and I get just as much money. I also don't have someone slashing MY story to fit what they think it should be.

Self-publishing gives YOU control over your materials, no one else. Most fiction authors I know go through self-publishing for their fiction because we're not queued up for years waiting on someone to notice us.

Yeah, the control is what is appealing to me. I like the idea of creating my covers, release dates, deadlines, etc. I know there's a lot of work that goes into self publishing, but when it comes to my writing, I really don't mind logging the hours. And that's another plus--I get to set my own hours. I write/create better at night, so I needed to work from 9pm-6am I could!

I love how we can release what we like when we like. CreateSpace also provides options to order promo materials if you're doing big promotions. I may look into that...not sure yet

I'm thinking of putting one of my really full-done shorter books out on CreateSpace this January, to flow around while I work hard as hell on this current one that is still omnibus huge. I might be able to do another in March, if I put forth the effort and make tiny illustrations to go with it. I don't want to trad publish like before, with so many venues.
