Osama Bin Laden

May 02, 2011 07:34

Quite the end to an already emotional weekend. The Spousal Unit and I were sitting in bed watching the last few minutes of Treme, just about to go lights out, when The Boyfriend came down the hall and said "Osama Bin Laden's been killed ( Read more... )

Yeah, I picked up on that one late-ish last night... was waiting for the new Girl Genius page to upload and watching the late local news when they went to live mode... was too tired to post then .. ;-) It was all over NPR and BBC this morning, too.

Good riddance, says I.. and a quick blip onto CNN seems not to show many folks getting upset in the Mideast so far... keeping the fingers crossed on that one.

Haven't keep up with the news much since the first couple of days after - I hope this continues to be true. I don't think he's going to be remembered as the icon he thought he would be. Good for that.

I found out almost the same way, just finished watching Friday night's episode of Fringe after having watched some t.v. and was channel surfing before bed when I happened on the news. It literally had just been announced though missed the president's speech. Must say I was happy to see that bin Laden finally met the proper end, though it did take awhile. Have to now see how events play out with his fanatical followers.

Yeah, I was telling momcat that I stopped keeping up a couple of days after the big news. Been pretty busy since then, as you might imagine. I hope things are still fairly quiet on that end. Not that we're out of danger, but at least Public Enemy #1 got the ending he deserved - though probably got off light, really.

LOL! Yeah, I thought about that after I posted. Talk about a Freudian slip. ;) That sure would be progressive of us - alas, I was referring to The Girl Child's boyfriend. *snerk*

So far, it looks like apart from a few crazies, most people in his neck of the woods are not only happy to see him gone, but are now not afraid to say so in public; I strongly suspect the only reason all this wasn't more roundly condemned is tpeople didn't wanna end up being added to his hit list.

What this sorry excuse for a human being will be remembered for is random murder, mayhem and destruction.

The irony here is that when the Arab Spring uprisings began, all of this nonsense was pushed aside in favor of direct action against the people actually responsible for their plight rather than random innocent civilians. And there's the possibility that maybe, just maybe, some people will actually start talking to each other... (hope springs eternal..!)
