Indeed! The artist certainly made that clear. Male also on the older coin, too worn to see so well... anyway, yes, traditionally animals shown on coins are males.
If birds or lions, male plumage looks better and more dramatic, but the real reason male images are preferred is male animals are perceived as more powerful than females.
OTOH, I don't know...maybe in India or other nations, power and wealth are better expressed by female cattle? It would make sense here, too, since a bull is just a bull, but a cow is a cow-making machine.
