Well, in a week, my daughter and I leave for Carcassonne in the south of France to have a holiday and compile research for an article on a woman who, rumour has it, runs some very bizarre study-tours about both the Albigensians and the Schism. Or it could all be a fraud. So I'm trying to wrap up all my current LJ projects before getting slam-dunked into Mediaeval history. That's the wonderful thing about following certain types of leads, even when they don't work out, there's usually a story in it.
Ooooooh, that's EXCITING! South France is so gorgeous, especially this time of year. Lucky thing! Especially when there's Mediaeval history involved. Have a fabulous time!!
No! LOL that's one thing I didn't do! I did however, aside from rhythmic gymnastics, take regular gymnastics, ballet, jazz, regular swimming, ice skating...plus all my music classes. XD *insane
( ... )
That is, do you think, say, two people could arrive at the same impression of good writing through discussion, without ever bringing in things like grammar, literary theory, etc.?
Wow, that DISCUSSION makes my head hurt, and I engage in Socratic dialogue every day at school. God. Seriously though, those sentences read like Aristotle - they say really interesting things, but they're so completely convoluted and full of asides that they require serious deconstruction in order to pull out the point. *headdesk*
Ha, your post hits on one of the major reasons I left academia. They train people in the art of writing and talking in circles... jargon, repetition, etc. And then they wonder why a lot of the general public is so ignorant about relatively simple theories and findings. Maybe because they can't understand what the hell you people are saying!
I think educated individuals need to make an effort to share their ideas in a way that can be understood by the general public.
Hello! Thought I'd drop by and say hallo. I've been seeing your fics popping up lately and I've got quite a few tabbed to read. :D It's always nice to see someone exciting sucked into the wonderful-ness of gay tennis fandom.
Hi there! I'm so excited to have you around! And yes, I've been totally sucked in. I wrote so much in HP for awhile, and then ran up against a wall, and now I'm full steam ahead with PoT. It's a very, very good (bad?) obsession to have.
Yes! The debate is fantastic. It's a bit frustrating at times, especially in seminar, because people have real difficulties leaving their ingrained beliefs outside (which I can understand, but still), but very enjoyable.
I think it is too, unless someone starts asking me to define how that works, because really...that just goes against the principle, doesn't it?
Interestingly, I've found that poppy seeds are a lot worse despite being smaller.
I've noticed that about sems. Psych especially seems to be a breeding ground for "Well, this is what my life is like!" But it's a science so you're supposed to be more objective. It ends up being fun, you're right, as long as no one dies.
LOL. Yes...somewhat paradoxical to define it in theoretical terms. XD
You, too! I've been trying to catch up -- I feel so dreadfully behind. <3

Who are all these strange-named people that you're writing fics about? I'm so out of touch! Write me some Doctor/Cpt. Jack. I neeeed it.
Also, in answer to your question: Yes. I'd explain why but my brain hurts very much. Bed time. *kiss*

You know, I do that all the time. It's really uncomfortable. :P
Hee. Yay debate! Yay Jung! Philosophy...mmm.
Yes, I think it's possible to arrive at the same conclusion via life experience. Life is funny that way.
I hope that the seminar went well! :D <3
