P.S. Have you thought about where/to what programs you're applying.
P.P.S. Did you realize that we both posted our most recent entries at exactly the same time? It put mine above yours on my friends page and so I almost missed it because it wasn't there before I went to post mine. Neat!
Intelligence? Sure. Pretty important. But not nearly as important as having the special letters behind your name from the right places. That is much more the function of discipline, and lots of it.
What it really needs?
The willingness to engage in some of the most bizarre and stupid rounds of political BS and bitchy cattiness and play the game. Especially if you want to work someplace other than a 4th Tier community college in the middle of nowhere - or have any desire for tenure. Expectations of behavior are higher in the Ivory Tower because it is the Ivory Tower - don't mistake the acceptance that people have as part of an undergraduate experience (where there is a societal expectation of "letting your hair down" and exploration) as being the same for academics
( ... )
I don't think it's discipline I lack in the real world, but (as far as professional development goes) natural leadership qualities. I've seen a lot of professors with zero leadership qualities, so I know it's possible. :P
