While The Shining was not very good as a Stephen King adaptation, I thought that it was really good as a Hollywood movie.  Jack Nicholson, who I tend to find generally creepy anyway, did a great job playing a man driven to madness.  I think it's unfortunate that the movie changed or flat out omitted a lot of things that made The Shining one of my ( Read more... )

TTWS is one of my all-time favorite bands! They actually have a new album out and are touring this year with Counting Crows. I've been debating whether I want to drive to Bethlehem in June to see Toad play at the Musikfest Cafe.

Loved the one tiny scene of Jack's wife finding the 600 pages or so of "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." I did that once, after Rhys bitched me out for sitting around and writing all damn day - again. Left an entire screen-full of it - it made us both laugh uncomfortably.

Jack Nicholson was a little too good with an ax - I read somewhere Props had to make the bathroom door he's tearing down at the end about 4 times as strong as they normally would, because he had once been a volunteer fireman and could rip a door down way too quickly for Kubrick's liking. Me, that got right under my skin - in most people's hands an ax is not a precision tool for door removal - but when it is, that scary mutherfucker on the other side means business... *shiver*

I wanted to be Stephan King when I grow up too - but for the Dark Tower books.

Sorry - can't meet you on the Toad the Wet Sprocket song - I hated that when it was all over the radio. Like Tears for Fears crossed with bad elevator music. Blech. But to each his own, I say :D

All of his books made me crave writing. Well, all of his pre-van books. Some of his post-van books were not my favorite. Doctor Sleep was the first book of his I madly, insanely adored since Desperation.

To each their own indeed. I've heard this song a million times and still love it.

Have you seen/read "N."? I think the collection was called "Just After Sunset" - and Marvel made a great serial e-comic for it! If you haven't seen it, it's up on my page in its entire form - give it a whorl. I'll have to check out "Dr. Sleep." Desperation was crazy... like verbal LSD. Loved it. :)

Nicholson seems to be the guy to call when you want ax-crazy (quite literally); not to say he doesn't do it well XD

Love the song :)

Yup, I remember The Shining being one of those movies that really shows a descent into madness.

That is a great song :D
