While The Shining was not very good as a Stephen King adaptation, I thought that it was really good as a Hollywood movie. Jack Nicholson, who I tend to find generally creepy anyway, did a great job playing a man driven to madness. Jack Nicholson was a little too good with an ax - I read somewhere Props had to make the bathroom door he's tearing down at the end about 4 times as strong as they normally would, because he had once been a volunteer fireman and could rip a door down way too quickly for Kubrick's liking. Me, that got right under my skin - in most people's hands an ax is not a precision tool for door removal - but when it is, that scary mutherfucker on the other side means business... *shiver*
I wanted to be Stephan King when I grow up too - but for the Dark Tower books.
Sorry - can't meet you on the Toad the Wet Sprocket song - I hated that when it was all over the radio. Like Tears for Fears crossed with bad elevator music. Blech. But to each his own, I say :D
