Ok, so I am going to put this behind the cut because I am going to rant about the treatment of prisoners in jail...and I know it's a touchy subject with some folks...
Unfortunately, we live in a society where in order to survive we need to presume the worst of people until they prove they aren't some psycho killer! Perhaps it is a little bit of media influence but I think people are a little scared of people, the world, what have you.
Does this mean prisoners should be treated poorly? No. But, I really don't understand how people in prison (who have already been convicted) get cable, workout equipment, etc. It's becoming the point where many people can't afford cable, gym memberships - or hell - FOOD! But people in jail are almost given these things. Cable is not a necessity it is a priviledge that should be reserved for people who haven't committed a crime.
That may be the case in some jails...it's definitely not the case in Harris County. They do not have cable, and no exercise equipment, or exercise of any kind, unless it's something you can do manually, in the confines of your own cell
( ... )
I guess in Mich. it's different (then again we don't even have the death penalty).
I do agree that they should have their basic needs met and phone call capabilities. I know there are some innocent people serving time because the system failed - as does any human based system have flaws.
Wow!!! I guess that is the big difference!! I live in the state that executes the most prisoners per year in the US!
Very true...and that part I can somewhat underestand...they go through the trial process and the system fails them (bad lawyer, bored jury, etc. etc.). What I don't get is how they can hold people in jail who have not even been given any opportunity to present their side of the story and have not been to trial and found guilty. I just think that's so reverse how it's supposed to work.

Anyway. Good rant. :)
