Hubble's main camera is a measly < 1mpx (800x800 CCD, built in 1975). Most of the gorgeous press release shots you've seen are scientifically-calibrated mosaics of teeny tiny pictures. It is being replaced by an entirely new camera with a 16mpx CCD in servicing mission 4.
