I've always been a plot person, valuing books and movies far more for tight, clever plots than for things like beauty of language, interesting characters, or evocative settings. I disagree on Avatar. I think the central theme of Avatar is redemption--regaining honor, restoring balance, reconciling broken relationships. That is the heart of the show.

I see HP more as Love vs Fear of Death. After all even the dreadful Malfoys chose love of their son over fear of death if Voldemort found out about Narcissa's deception about Harry's death
