It's visually stunning as I've said before. The acting is top notch, particularly Hugh Dancy. I appreciate that they've genderflipped two male characters to female and cast Lawrence Fishburn for a role that's always been cast as white ( Read more... )

i am dubious about this, i'm part of the precipitate, criminal minds, hannibal, srs biznes

I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts. Very few shows do victimhood as well as Criminal Minds, and I was disappointed that Hannibal was so Disposable Women about them.

And the gender/race flipping is excellent, especially Fishburne and Lara Jean Chorostecki as Freddie Lounds (oh my god, I did not expect to like her so much). But seeing as there's no Anderson in sight and Gina Torres will only likely cameo, they're really low on their lady-count. They still have yet to develop their two main women into characters beyond "Will's therapist who's crushing on him" and "cute and witty Asian forensic scientist". There's Freddie, but I'm not confident they can develop her past the foregone "morally-bankrupt tabloid reporter", and there's Abigail, who has some real potential, though the budding-sociopath hints have me a bit nervous.

I was really disturbed by the mushroom women and not in the way they intended (though there was that, too). They were treated like prop pieces. And while I get that people who work in forensics and deal with dead bodies come to have a certain morbid sense of humor and detachment, wooooooow at the nonchalance. That's a pretty what the fuck scenario, and they were kinda acting like it's an everyday occurrence. I don't think they need to be super detached in order to contrast Graham's super speshul empathy, if that's what they were intending ( ... )

I watched the first two eps, and the second was definitely better done. I have mixed feelings about it though, as it's creepy as fuck and I had a REALLY hard time being terrified by Silence...so I'm not sure I'll be able to watch it. Also, I have a hard time caring about Will as he's too much like me in regards to the social anxiety and depression. Hugh Dancy kicks ass and I'm so happy to see him and Mads back together - Mads' accent is hard for me to understand sometimes, but he's good as well.

LOL what the hell was my point? I guess it's a bit overdone in terms of the "artsy" framing and the non-linear writing, which normally doesn't bother me. I just felt like it was done in order to be "edgy" and not for the telling of the story. However, the acting was outstanding and it was really creepy.

I don't think I'll watch more, but I did get excited to see Gillian Anderson was coming on. We'll see.

I rewatched the two eps so far with a friend, and I think I liked them better the second time around, because I can just sort of let go of some of my issues and just enjoy them as presented. It still makes me uncomfortable in certain places that I don't think they intended. I'm a pretentious person though, so I looooooove the pretentious artsy framing and non-linear stuff lol, but I can see how it can be offputting. It did throw me a little bit the first time around and I got confused about a lot of what was going on.

I do intend to keep up with the show and hopefully continue to post about it. If you do continue to watch, let me know what you think!
