more on Hannibal

It's visually stunning as I've said before. The acting is top notch, particularly Hugh Dancy. I appreciate that they've genderflipped two male characters to female and cast Lawrence Fishburn for a role that's always been cast as white.

On the other hand: lots and lots and lots of mutilated dead women.

And they're prop pieces. One of the victims from this past ep got a name, a little bit of a moment, but there were tons more who were literally nameless and faceless. Will Graham is asked to put himself into the minds of killers, which makes sense, but that just marginalizes the victims even more.

One of the things I used to love about Criminal Minds is that they had a very strong focus on the victims, on their story, their POV, their agency. They're not dead bodies in a morgue, they're not bloodied slabs on the pavement. They're people with grieving families. They are a loss to the world for having been killed. No matter how marginalized that victim was in life and in death, the BAU treated them as people. The loss of that aspect is part of the reason why I felt really betrayed by the show and eventually ragequit entirely.

I appreciate that Will Graham emphasizes with Abigail and from the previews, she will return and hopefully get some sort of a voice. There's Gillian Anderson upcoming, and I greatly look forward to that as well.

So, I do like the show, but I am uncomfortable with it. And while I know it's perfectly legit to like a problematic show, because here I am, liking this show, I am already wary of its fandom.

i am dubious about this, i'm part of the precipitate, criminal minds, hannibal, srs biznes
