I think the worst of it is that it's part of a pattern. Apparently the reason Melina Kankaredes isn't back for the new series of CSI:NY is because they asked her to take a pay cut. It'd be interesting to know if the male cast members were asked to do so and whether they were the same size of cut.

I heard about her leaving, but I really thought she was sick of being on the same show or she was burning out/needing a rest or whatever, which is a belief with no factual basis, only that *I* would get sick of being on CSI:NY for so damn long when the show has gotten so ridic. But if it's because of sexist money cutting ways? HULK SMASH.

Even if Angell weren't cut for money reasons, she was killed for the sake of giving Flack angst, which is bad enough in itself.

Fucking amen to all of this. It's one of those things that just, argh, there's no win. On one hand, yeah, entertainment. On the other hand, there's so much social conditioning and/or stereotyping and/or insert-more-words-here that gets perpetuated because popular entertainment is reinforcing all of it. RAR.

Entertainment is a huge giant mirror of society, of who we are, who we want to be. Granted, as much as I hate holier than thou entertainers who claim social movement in their work more than they're due (I'm looking at YOU, George Clooney, despite my otherwise usual liking for you), there IS a HUGE level of influence there.

It's hard, getting angry at television. Because there's the whole "lighten up" aspect, which, yeah, been there and done that. But it isn't "just" TV. Entertainment is incredibly insidious precisely because it's looked upon as fluff and "not important." This is the shit that shapes us the most, because it's pervasive, under the radar, and thought of as unnecessary of deeper thought. It's the unexamined and unchallenged that persists.

Wow, hmmmm. I really can't recall offhand any specific instances of AJ referring to his mom, so I don't have a canon reference. But I do feel that he's a "mom" kind of guy in most typical conversation, but might use the occasional "mama said" to make a point.

Yep. I went to check out the preview on YouTube, and as soon as the dude's new partner showed reluctance to work with his insufferable (and, it's implied, dangerous?) ass I could see the character arc now: reluctant partner learns to recognize the irreverent genius of the white male lead! Soon plot happens and he's putting his neck on the line to protect his Special Snowflake Honky Partner! Because poc/women just need to learn to recognize the importance of white men and sacrifice for them!

EXACTLY. See, I knew you'd get how I feel about that fucking show. The dude doesn't even have the charm of Simon Baker, though, once again, it's an interesting thing within and without the show, how we continually forgive SB's asinine comments and Jane's ugly behaviour all because he's good looking and fwee. Though I gotta admit that I still haven't caught up with the latter half of S2 Mentalist and probably never will and therefore won't be watching S3 because apparently I actually do have a limit. (But I watch Supernatural, so. IDK. *loses feminist cred

(But I watch Supernatural, so. IDK. *loses feminist cred*) The way I figure it, if I'm going to endure a jackass white dude lead protag, he'd better earn my time by being charming/pretty. It's certainly not the most feminist trade off there ever was--and there are times when I just get sick of 'em even though they're pretty--but it's a way to sort out which of the abysmal shows I will choose. If they're going to be fawned all over by everybody, there should at least be a meta and in story reason why they draw people to themselves like that
