What Gender Is Your Fiction?

OK, this is kinda cool. :) brainofck linked to it in her journal and I wandered over to try it out. You paste the text of a story (or whatever) into this thing and it uses an algorithm to try to determine whether the writer was male or female. And of course half the fun for a slash writer is trying to convince it you're male. ;)

That's interesting. I ran 14 stories/story sections through the thing. Seven came out female, seven came out male. Six of the seven that came out male were slash. Four of the seven female results were for slash.

Should I mention that I'm Pisces? ;)

Heh. Actually, assuming the algorithm is accurate in the first place, I think it's good for a writer to be able to take on different tones and voices, you know? So those of us who are going both ways probably have some sort of an advantage. [nodnod]

Humm, interesting. Is it really that you're writing more "male" as you go or might it be a function of the mood and tone of the particular stories? I know mine definitely go back and forth depending on what kind of effect I was trying for when I was writing. [ponder]

I think it goes back to the stereotypical "male" and "female". Men are usually more visual, and women are more about feelings. Male writing is definitive and descriptive (below, above, these), while female writing tends to be about feelings and decisions (should, would, could).

To bag my own fic, I know when I'm just writing something that I want to be romantic and schmoopy. And then I know when I'm writing something that gets into the mindset of Brian, because he's a very "MALE" character.

I know when I'm going out of character, and that's when the Genie called me out and said I was female.

Interesting, but very stereotyped...

Well, yeah, it'd pretty much have to. I mean, if they didn't go with the stereotypes then they'd have nothing to base the algorithm on, you know? It's pretty clearly registering writing styles or modes rather than the actual gender of the writer, and there is a difference in how it sounds or feels or however you want to describe it.

I know when I'm going out of character, and that's when the Genie called me out and said I was female.

Hehehe! OK, now I have this image of a writer using it to check OOCness as she goes....

How's that? Nope, too girly. OK, how about now? Damn, still too girly! OK, check THIS out!! Hah, finally!

LOL!
