stupid things that bother me
include the fact that the Revels edn's footnote on the this dialogue in Woodstock act 4 scene 1 reads "Despite Richard's precise claim to disburse thirty-nine shires, his catalogue lists only thirty-seven shires plus London" (also everything in Wales, but it doesn't mention that), the editors don't say which ones are missing. Possibly it is not necessary if you are conversant in the historic counties of England.
As it turns out (I determined after entirely more work than is strictly necessary) the missing shires are Durham and Nottinghamshire. Durham is firmly in Scroope country, but Nottinghamshire is kind of a grey area.
This is the sort of thing I think about when I have a job interview in seven hours. *bites fingernails*
