just in case the headsman wants to give her an encore, she has her head tucked underneath her arm

So this evening J and Beth and I went to see The Other Boleyn Girl, since whenever an overinflated Tudor-era costume drama we go to see it so that we'll have clever things to say when people ask, and also we are all masochists.

More below the cut. The short version: it was really bad, and not the right kind of bad to be hilarious like Elizabeth: Read more... )

Yup. Really good thing I'm not expecting anything but costume porn.

I'm actually kind of impressed to hear that Bana even musters broody.

My husband thinks I should take my almost-13-year-old daughter to see this but I'm feeling "NO WAY IN HELL" since I want her to actually, you know, like history and get something besides porn from movies. (She can get the porn from fanfiction in a few years if nothing else.) Thanks for the review.

Heh. It's not very porny, actually, since the sex is inexplicit and dull and, in general, poorly acted. But it is an extremely boring film, so don't bother. Show her Anne of the Thousand Days or something instead.

My feeling is that she'll settle for any movie out with her mom so we'll find something that's at least fun for a night's outing and then watch something historical on DVD at home. Of course, we could have a lot of fun sporking "Lady Jane"!

Funny you should say that -" Anne of a Thousand" Days was on late on Friday eve - haven't seen it for years! Spent most of it thinking how like "Prince Humperdinck" of "Princess Bride fame", the actor playing Cromwell looked (with a bit of Count Drugen thrown in, when Smeaton was being tortured!) *grin* . Other than that, Richard Burton was fab!

What I want to know is: is George still gay? So much of that gets left out in transition.

It doesn't really come up, except in his general distaste for and avoidance of his wife.

Yeah. I mean, one of the few things I knew about the book going in was that George was gay in it (I am not sure how I knew that), so I guess that sort of colored my reading, but yeah, agreed about the incest angle.

And yet ... and yet ... I will probably still be totally unable to resist going. For the costume-porn, if nothing else. Hey - there's no Pooh-colored chainmail; that has to be worth something. ;c)

(Btw, I don't think that "there's basically no plot" counts as a spoiler, even a "how-they-handle-the-plot" spoiler.)

The costumes are very pretty (although Henry's made me giggle), I will admit. And there is in fact no chainmail of any sort. ;)

Sigh. I was hoping for bad-but-good.
