Oh yay, how exciting about Malfi! (I do wish they had filmed the one with Eve Best and Viserys Targaryen!Ferdinand, although I love Gemma Arterton.)

The Duchess of Malfi production was beautiful. Not perfect, but very, very good. And, yes, the Ferdinand casting was excellent. The thin portions of the plot remained thin, but the crescendo of sinister elements was well-executed. And, oh my, the house is gorgeous!

I suspect that in a filmed version, the production's faults will seem more significant: the thrill of being there for the first production of the first season made me willing to overlook some of those weaknesses. (For instance, they were overly in love with playing with the candle light--there were scenes in which the chandeliers were lowered to chest-level, and the action was played around them, which meant there was a possibility that someone might back up into a candle with a lock of hair or a bit of lace and go up in flames. I expect that after another production or two, "Let's do something with the candles!" will no longer be such a thing.)

Ooh, someone who's been there! Do you have any thoughts about the best places to sit? I'm planning to see one of the summer shows, but I keep getting confused by all the choices.

I would second all this re. the pit seating - I ended up right at the front completely accidentally - wonderful view but hard on the legs and neck (due to having to crane it continuously).
