Cinema - Beowulf

Went to see Beowulf last night with M and was pleasantly surprised - the reviews I'd read were quite lukewarm and I think it may be falling betwen two stools. Literary people won't touch it with a bargepole because "OMG animation!" and "Hollywood!" and the like, and it's far too adult/gory/literary/grim/complicated for the audience of teenagers ( Read more... )

Ooh, this sounds a lot better from your review than I had expected. I especially like the idea of the sacred marriage aspect (although that Wikipedia article is terrible!), and am glad to hear that such thought has gone into the production. I might actually make the effort to see it now - although I hadn't been planning to bother.

Yep, I did think of you and your Receptions stuff - certainly it can be read as reflection of some very contemporary moral values as well.

And yes, that wikipedia piece is dreadful, but I wanted something that would get the point across quickly for people who hadn't come across the idea before, without taking ages to trawl the internets for it. Don't spose you know of a better one?

No, I'm afraid not. The Wiki article needs rewriting by someone with a clue, really - but I think both of us have better uses for our time!

That sounds really interesting, though sadly still too gory/grim for me to enjoy it. Not a Pants-film.

I was wondering what it was like, now I really must put more effort into locating a babysitter and get myself off to the cinema to see it!
