A Game of Thrones, by George R.R. Martin

I'd put myself on the waiting list for the audio book version of this book over a month ago, and it finally came around to my turn this past Wednesday. When I first added myself to the list, there were over a hundred people ahead of me, and I know there are probably about that many behind me, so I'll only have twenty-eight days to get through ( Read more... )

the show cuts through a lot of the fluff but remains super faithful to plot and characterization. I highly highly recommend it.

I actually prefer the TV series. The writing of the book bugged me at times (style) though I like the characters (exception: Catelyn Stark). Of course there were times that the book expounded on parts that they couldn't squeeze into the TV series (Dany's feelings about "home" and the Dothraki etc.)

However I've started on Book 2 and the writing has pleased me so far. :)

Interesting! I haven't had too many problems with the first book, but I think that might be because I'm actually listening to it instead of reading it in the traditional way. Sometimes there are books that if I just sit down to read them, I can't stick with them. But if they're read to me, I'm better able to get involved in them.

Book 2 is good? Excellent! :)

I read the first three books and opted not to continue. I like flawed characters A LOT, but the people in GoT are almost across-the-board horrible monsters that I don't like spending time with. (I do like the Starks, but...well, no spoilers.)

I'll continue to watch the show because hubby is a fan and the show smooths some of the rough edges. The characters are more appealing when they're portrayed by good actors (Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, Aiden Gillen, and Michelle Fairley are among my faves). Daenerys and Cersei in particular are my least favorite characters in the books and are more tolerable when you don't have to hear their inane thoughts. Tyrion and Catelyn are my faves and are even more fun as portrayed by Peter Dinklage and Michelle Fairley.

OTOH, I don't recall anything that I really wanted to see that the show skipped over (there is indeed a lot of fluff in those doorstoppers). So definitely go for it!

I'm curious about the show from what little I've heard about it, but I think I'll read a little bit more of the series before I start watching it. I might like it if only for the fact that there are awesome actors in it like Sean Bean as well as the fact that it's more easily digestable than the books are.

Thanks for the heads up! :)
